Nonito Donaire Interview

“Fighting one of the world’s best boxers who have grown into a monster is a big motivation,” said Donaire, a multiple world champion in four weight classes.

“I’m just very excited,” said the 36-year-old. “I don’t see myself with any disadvantages going into the final.

“I will give everything I have to win and I believe I can do it. It has been predicted that the keys to the fight are speed and power and the one who makes a mistake first will lose. On the other hand, we both have boxing brains, so it can be a long game like chess.”

Now that last night's carefully stage-managed $50 million+ money transfer in Vegas has been successfully concluded (with full media co-operation and no Ruiz type glitch) we can now look forward a real boxing match set in a place far from the reaches of the Vegas cartel.

Naoya Inouye is the only serious challenger to Vasyl Lomachenko for the best pound for pound as far as I'm concerned. Of course he can't come close to matching Loma's achievements but in that regard neither can anyone else currently.

Donaire has had plenty of time to prepare for this and will definitely come in well prepared. It also remains to be seen what happens when, (or maybe if) Inoue is eventually forced on to the defensive. We already know he's a master assassin but can he take it back, can he fight in the trenches?

Will Nonito Donaire be the boxer to give us the answer? Just a few days left before we find out.

‘Monster’ Naoya Inoue (18-0, 16 KOs) and Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire (40-5, 26 KOs) were both in confident moods at Monday’s medical check in Tokyo ahead of Thursday’s WBSS Bantamweight Ali Trophy final at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Naoya Inoue: “Nonito’s only advantage is his experience, he has been in many big fights. He is taller and his reach is longer, but that’s something we have prepared for.”

Nonito Donaire: “Like we saw with Canelo vs Kovalev, height doesn’t matter, size doesn’t matter. Ultimately it’s about the game plan, and I believe I have the game plan to beat Inoue. And my experience will carry me through.”

On Tuesday the pair will meet again at the final press conference before the final.

WBSS Final Press Conference Quotes

“A year ago this tournament started, a year later I am in the final against Nonito Donaire, and I am very grateful for that,” said 26-year-old Inoue at a jam-packed final press conference in Tokyo.

The IBF and Ring Magazine champion at 118 pounds told him he grew up being a fan of his Filipino counterpart.

“I’ve been watching Nonito’s fights even before I became professional, and he’s one of the fighters who I admire. I am truly proud of myself to be in the ring with him the day after tomorrow.”

The Muhammad Ali Trophy was on display on a plinth just on the right side of the Japanese superstar at the top table.

“It’s a beautiful trophy, I like the design,” said ‘The Monster’ about the ‘Greatest Prize in Boxing’ named after ‘The Greatest of All Time’. As if he was inspired by WBSS’s virtual ambassador he went on to say:

“The winner of this tournament will be crowned as the greatest of the division. I am representing Japan as a professional boxer and I will show the greatest performance of my career as an answer to all the exceptions here.

“The appeal of the WBSS is that we can decide who is the best in the division. I would like to be victorious, but I’m not stopping there. In the future, I want to be the greatest of all time!”

Said 36-year-old Nonito Donaire, the WBC Diamond and WBA ‘Super’ World Bantamweight champion, who has held multiple world championships in four weight classes:

“Naoya is the top fighter in the world pound-for-pound which is very exciting for me. But I trust in my ability, and I will be able to adapt to the situation.

“Fighting Naoya Inoue has given me motivation. I’ve accomplished so much, so I needed someone to motivate me. It’s brought back my youth again because I have to be at my best.

“Being in this tournament has been tremendous. All these young guys trying to prove themselves and weed out the old generation. But so far, I’ve proven I’m a wall that needs to be climbed, and it’s not an easy wall to climb.”

Not sure, but there you have proof of Donaire at 5'5, can't imagine that he's actually 5'7.5 like BoxRec have him or 5'7 like listed in some other places. Apparently he's reached his career high height just at 36
