Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
The Tate that beat Coetzee vs the Cooney that kayoed Norton. Who wins?
Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Or Cooney by KO early or Tate by UD.
Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
A quite even matchup. Tate looked more solid as a boxer, but wasn't really special, while Cooney could deliver terrible punishment. I'd favor Cooney to KO Tate.
Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Same here. Tate was a fine boxer against mediocre competition but never fought anyone who could hit like prime Cooney.
Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Cooney by KO. Tate was no Holmes and Cooney gave Holmes a very tough bout.

Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Both guys were excellent fighters while still being active and undefeated. Both fizzled into obscurity after suffering their first defeats. Neither man was much for taking a beating. I might be apt to going with Cooney, but i say that with no conviction.
Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Gerry Cooney was a beast. He needed confidence.Even with that as his flaw,he only lost to the Greats of the sport and gave a good account doing so.He'd catch Tate and dig in.Tate would crumble.

Re: Gerry Cooney vs Big John Tate
Whoever lands the first big punch here would win. That's because both fighters were big guys who could not take a big punch. Between the two, Cooney was by far the more dangerous hitter.
However, I believe that Tate had the better hands. He was quicker, more agile, and more accurate in his punching than Big Gerry. Therefore I think Tate would land the first big punch, and from there, jump on top of Cooney to finish the show.
Tate by stoppage anywhere from one to five rounds. But Cooney would have been a live underdog here, and possibility might have closed the the show on Big John within a round or two.
80% chance of a Tate win vs 20% chance of Cooney victory.
