I would rather see Valdez-Stevenson which would have been a much bigger challenge for Shakur than Gonzalez. I see Stevenson defeating Gonzo by clearcut decision...9 rounds to 3 or 8-4.

How did Gonzalez get to that 1st spot. It sucks that we have come to just accept these type of things. A solid prospect gets awarded a vacant belt against a hopless guy with a decent record who got to the 1st spot without fighting anyone in the ranking.

Shakur hasn't exactly done much more than Gonzalez, I man his best win was a decision over a guy routed by the guy Herring dominated. It's basically a prospect fight for a belt, Gonzalez would be Shak's best win IMO.

A deal was agreed to Friday night for a vacant featherweight world title fight between unbeaten up-and-comers Shakur Stevenson and Joet Gonzalez, representatives for both fighters told ESPN.

Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, which promotes Stevenson, and Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez, Gonzalez's promoter, said they have agreed to terms for the bout, which will take place as the main event of a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+ card Oct. 26 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada.

The sides came to an agreement well ahead of a purse bid for the fight, which was scheduled for Sept. 14 in the lobby of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Gomez said he is awaiting paperwork from Top Rank.

"Devil is in the details," he said. "I need a contract from Top Rank and then Joet and [manager] Frank [Espinoza] have to sign off on it, but Carl and I are good."

A formal announcement is slated to take place Sept. 13 at a news conference at the MGM Grand at which Top Rank plans to unveil several of its fall main events.

Stevenson-Gonzalez was mandated after Oscar Valdez elected to vacate the WBO featherweight title and move up to the junior lightweight division.

Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs), 22, a southpaw from Newark, New Jersey, and a 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist, was Valdez's mandatory challenger. When the title became vacant, Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs), 25, of Los Angeles, was the next in line and ordered to face Stevenson for the belt.

Both fighters are coming off recent knockout victories on the same night, but on different cards on opposite sides of the country.

Gonzalez knocked out fringe contender Manuel Avila in the sixth round July 13 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, and Stevenson drilled Alberto Guevara in the third round of a homecoming fight at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Both fighters will be taking a step up in competition as they vie for a world title.

"This is by far the toughest fight for each guy," Moretti said. "We didn't care where the fight ended up. We know how good Shakur Stevenson is and fully expect him to win his first of many world titles that night. He's special."

Stevenson and Gonzalez are the WBO’s top two contenders for the belt vacated by Oscar Valdez, who is now campaigning at 130 pounds.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Let’s Get It On Promotions, Golden Boy, and Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Stevenson-Gonzalez and a co-feature will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport streaming service, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs), the fighting pride of Newark, New Jersey, turned pro in April 2017 following a standout amateur career that included a 2016 Olympic silver medal for the United States. He is familiar with Reno, having won four national titles in “The Biggest Little City in the World” from 2013-2015, including his triumph at the Olympic Trials. Stevenson returned to Reno as a pro, shutting out Juan Tapia over eight rounds in February 2018 to improve to 5-0. He has fought three times thus far in 2019, including a career-best performance April 20 against former world title challenger Christopher Diaz on the Terence Crawford-Amir Khan pay-per-view undercard. He followed up the unanimous decision over Diaz with a triumphant return to Newark, where more than 5,000 fans packed the Prudential Center for his third-round stoppage over Alberto Guevara.

Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs) is a seven-year pro who has the edge in experience, and at 25 years old, is three years older than Stevenson. Like Stevenson, he had a storied amateur career, nearly qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics and winning a U.S. Junior Olympics title. Gonzalez has won three consecutive bouts by knockout since a split decision victory over former world title challenger Rafael Rivera. He last fought July 13 in Carson, California, capturing the WBO Global and WBA Continental America Featherweight titles with a sixth-round stoppage over Manuel Avila. Immediately following the Avila bout, he expressed interest in fighting in Stevenson, and the two have since been engaged in a social media back-and-forth. The talking will stop — and the fight will start — on October 26.

Like many American males, Joet Gonzalez wants to beat the crap out of his younger sister’s boyfriend.

“It’s accurate,” Joet Gonzalez told Boxing Scene. “They’ve been dating for about three years. It’s been a while. The thing is, I never liked him since the amateurs. I think he’s not good enough for my sister. I’m the older brother, so I’m trying to lead my sister the best route possible. I think there’s better people out there for her. But at the end of the day, she’s gonna date who she wants. All I’ve gotta do is support her, be behind her. But if I don’t like the person, I don’t like the person. I’m keeping my relationship with my sister. With him, I can care less.”

While he’s training to fight Stevenson, Joet Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs) doesn’t plan to have any contact with Jajaira, one of his five siblings. The Azusa, California, native said Friday he hasn’t spoken to her in “a good while.”

“For this fight, I distanced myself a little from my sister,” Joet Gonzalez said. “I’ve gotta do what I’ve gotta do. I can’t let emotions take over. Come fight time, I’ve just gotta get the job done. I’ve been working my whole life for this, since I was 10 years old. At the end of the day, I’m gonna do what I have to do. It doesn’t matter, the opponent. I’m gonna get the job done.”

Stevenson called Joet Gonzalez “a bitch” during the press conference. He admitted afterward the hard feelings are mutual.

“I can’t tell you no reason,” Stevenson said. “I just do not like him. I been didn’t like him for a long time, and I’m gonna beat him up.”

A smiling Stevenson pretended he didn’t know what reporters asked about when he was pressed regarding dating his opponent’s sister.

“I don’t know you’re talking about,” Stevenson said. “I’m just as confused as you. I don’t know what you’re talking about. … I can’t really tell y’all. I don’t know what makes it different, but I’m telling y’all I do not like him. Me on stage with him right now, I wanted to punch him. I wanted to beat him up.”

Joshua Greer Jr. vs Antonio Nieves to co-feature on Stevenson-Gonzalez card

Two bantamweights with world title hopes will collide later this month

According a report from ESPN, bantamweight Joshua Greer Jr. (21-1-1, 12 KOs) has just been scheduled to take on Antonio Nieves (19-2-2, 11 KOs) as the co-featured bout on the October 26th card headlined by Shakur Stevenson vs. Joet Gonzalez. Junior lightweight Mikaela Mayer will also be making an appearance, putting her regional title on the line against Alejandra Zamora. The card will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Nevada.

Greer, 25, is most recently coming off a majority decision win over Nikolai Potapov this past July in a fight that considered debatable. That said, he’s hoping to make a statement here and demonstrate his improvements.

“I want to show everyone on Oct. 26 what I’ve been working on,” Greer said. “I’m only getting better. Every fight is a learning experience, and I am going to show Antonio Nieves what I’m about. The knockout didn’t come in my last fight, but it’s all part of the game. I’m bringing back the pillow, and after I beat Nieves, I will be Mr. ESPN+.”

Meanwhile Nieves, 32, is coming off two straight stoppage wins since he was stopped himself by Naoya Inoue back in 2017. Obviously two fights in that past two years doesn’t make Nieves an active fighter, but he still says he has world title aspirations.

“My primary goal is to become a world champion,” Nieves said. “Joshua Greer Jr. is ranked second by one of the major sanctioning organizations and third by another. I am coming to Reno to beat him, take over his sport in the rankings and win a world championship in 2020.”

▪ Lightweight Albert Bell (15-0, 5 KOs), of Toledo, Ohio, who is coming off a career-best 10-round decision win over then-unbeaten Andy Vences on June 15, will return against Philadelphia's Frank De Alba (23-4-2, 9 KOs) in an eight- or 10-rounder.

▪ Vences (22-1-1, 12 KOs) of San Jose, California, will look to bounce back from the loss to Bell against the Philippines' Mark Bernaldez (19-2, 13 KOs) in an eight- or 10-round fight.

▪ Albuquerque, New Mexico, featherweight Jason Sanchez (14-1, 7 KOs) will take on former world title challenger Adeilson Dos Santos (19-6, 15 KOs), of Brazil, in an eight- or 10-round bout. Sanchez will be fighting for the first time since losing a unanimous decision to Oscar Valdez, whom he challenged for a featherweight world title on June 8 in Reno.

▪ Junior lightweight Tyler McCreary (16-0-1, 7 KOs), of Toledo, Ohio, will fight Pittsburgh's Matt Conway (17-0, 7 KOs) in an eight-rounder.

▪ A pair of former U.S. amateur standouts will make their long-awaited professional debuts in four-rounders. Welterweight Xander Zayas, 17, of Plantation, Florida, who was 16 when he became the youngest fighter to ever sign with Top Rank in its 53-year history in March, will face an opponent to be named. Toledo, Ohio, heavyweight Jared Anderson, a two-time U.S. national champion, who signed with Top Rank last month, will face Daniel Infante (1-2, 0 KOs) of Youngstown, Ohio.

▪ Reno junior welterweight JJ Mariano (1-0, 1 KO) will face Trinity Lopez (1-0, 0 KOs) in a four-round bout. Mariano will be returning to the arena where he scored a knockout June 8 on the Valdez-Sanchez card.

▪ Lightweight Diego Elizondo (2-0-2, 0 KOs), from nearby Carson City, Nevada, will fight Port Arthur, Texas, product Jose Ceja (1-4-2, 0 KOs) in a four-rounder.

Nice interview & seems like a likable guy but I think Joet is in over his head with Stevenson. Not that this isnt a winnable fight for Gonzalez but it would definitely be an upset if he does pull it off. Shakur is too quick & has more boxing skills but Joet could make it competitive.
