Andre Rozier and Daniel Jacobs Officially Split

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

A trainer-fighter relationship can be very much like a marriage, with ups and downs, twists and turns, and sometimes, fractures.

Such as on Saturday night, coach Andre Rozier in a chat with ThaBoxingVoice was asked if he was still working with Daniel Jacobs, last seen tussling in May with Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas, and taking an L.

“No,”
replied Rozier, at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, there to see young Patrick Day perform against Charles Conwell.

Jacobs’ advisor Keith Connolly was asked if the Brooklyn native — who holds a 35-3 mark and is supposed to be gloving up again in December at 168 pounds — if the fighter has selected a new tutor. He said he didn’t want to comment.

Rozier was not available for comment at press time.

A strange-ish situation arose when Jacobs fought Sergiy Derevyanchenko, also trained for several years by Rozier, in Oct. 2018. Rozier worked the Jacobs corner and co-trainer Gary Stark Sr cornered the Ukrainian, who lost via split decision at the Madison Square Garden Theater.

Jacobs’ corner was formerly helmed by Victor Roundtree, who died from diabetes in 2013. Roundtree, a former amateur boxer, discovered Jacobs when he was 14 at the Police Athletic League Howard Houses in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Rozier took over the lead dog reins when Victor passed on.

Whispers about a Rozier-Jacobs parting have been rumored within the fight game sphere for a spell, but the two principals, as yet, haven’t shared about what changed their dynamic.

Wonder how much of Jacob's purse he took against Canelo.. It seem's these trainers still want 10%, kinda like how GGG and Sanchez's relationship went..

Jacob's aint gonna learn anything new is he? Different styles? Who knows.

Jacob's received a base purse of $2.5 million against Canelo.. But was guaranteed over $10m due to his contract with DAZN..

I know he got docked a mil for being overweight.. standard 10% is $1m.. What trainer wouldn't be happy with that.. Or even half of that.

10% is a fair cut for a trainer.

I was hating on Andre Rozier about this split, maybe greed etc. I'm not hating anymore.

Do the math. This story is about math, if you think about it, but more so it’s about love, and quality time spent and seemingly forgotten. It’s about loyalty.

So I just found out, Jacob's purse for the Canelo fight was actually $15m in the end. He gave up $1m due to weight of course.

As many boxers do, when a boxer starts receiving higher paychecks, a boxer and trainer generally re-negotiate the 10% fee. Which is fine. Can't imagine Mayweather giving his dad $3m from his fight against McGregor (for example). Same reason Abel and GGG split, GGG was not going to give Abel $1m from his $100 DAZN deal, it's understandable.

So apparently, a 5% purse cut was agreed for Rozier.

From a $15m purse, we're looking at what $750k?

After the fight, Jacobs sends Rozier his check, how much??

$100,000 !!!

“He sent it to me without an explanation,” Rozier said to Nam. “Besides the fact that he treated me like I was nowhere near family to him, it’s the biggest slap that anybody could ever give a trainer. So I just said, ‘I can’t, I can’t.’”

What??

That's not even 1% of his purse.

To a man who he considered family and someone who got him through the cancer.

Does Danny not remember telling CNN, ”It was the hardest challenge in my life and I couldn’t do it alone,” Jacobs said of his face-off with cancer. “Andre supported me through that time 100 percent. ... I love him to death.”
