What happened to Luis Garcia?

Post by Controversial »

I was just listening to Carl Froch talking about a great Cuban amateur boxer he used as his sparring partner, Luis Garcia. He was world junior amateur champion before defecting to Ireland to turn pro. Froch said Garcia was so fast that he couldn't lay a glove on him and Garcia used to beat him up. Garcia cracked Froch's rib and perforated his eardrum before Froch's first world title fight.

Just looked him up and he turned pro and went 15-0 (12KOS) and then never fought again, he took a few years off in between. He won his last three fights in the 1st round.

Anyone know what happened to him?

That was the guy who moved to Ireland, Yes? He had promotional and managerial issues. He was signed to Dibella and was supposed to fight last year, but it never took place. Never heard from him again.

He's gotta be 32/33 now. He was dynamite. Something else must've been going on.

31 at the moment but 32 in December (assuming his age is correct). Maybe just didn't have the desire, I notice he started as a SMW, then LHW and then CW which suggests he might not have been training as hard as he should have?

Without wanting to cast aspersions on Garcia’s skills, Carl does come out with some comments. Like talking about levels prior to Eubank vs Groves, based on sparring with Chris

I'm sure he does but the guy was a Cuban world amateur champion so I reckon he could fight a bit and was unbeaten as a pro. It a shame when these prospects disappear without a trace.
