It'd be nice to go and be apart of history, but, Toledo's not the kind of place outsiders ought to go (imho) because everyone will be seen as an easy mark to get robbed, etc. That's the kind of place you go to in groups, so that's less likely to happen.
you don't have the money ?
dude Toledo 's only 112 miles from where you live
anyway-who says once you get to Toledo you have to be driving to right thru the sh*t neighbourhoods to where the celebrations are being held at the site?
when you exit the main highway to there just drive-along the road that borders the lake front to where it is,that should be safe
just remember if you gotta stay the night rent a motel room in a rural area some 40 miles outside the city limits
( just to be on the safe side)
I think there was an app developed a few years ago that you could down-load to find out where the bad/high crime neighbourhoods in the various cities across the USA.
were but they were ruled "discrimatory".( for some reason)
here is a web page that may help tho.

25 Most Dangerous Cities in America

15. Toledo, Ohio
> Violent crime rate: 1,192 per 100,000
> 2016 murders: 37
> Poverty rate: 27.8%
> Unemployment rate: 5.6%

Crime is often most prevalent in cities with widespread poverty. In Toledo, 27.8% of residents live in poverty, and 14.7% of households earn less than $10,000 a year — each among the largest shares of any major U.S. city. There were 1,193 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents in Toledo in 2016, more than three times the national rate of 386 incidents per 100,000 Americans.

Jess Willard was taking a tremendous beating from Jack Dempsey in all of the first three rounds before failing to come out for the fourth. Yes, Willard was throwing punches, but seemed to be unable to land any telling blows. Such a bout would have been stopped in the first round if it took place one hundred years later.

From: The Toledo Blade

The celebration, dubbed Toledo’s Day in the Sun, will take place at Detwiler Park, 4001 N. Summit St.

The event will include a children’s area with a bounce castle and slide, a giant connect four game, a giant Jenga, and an obstacle course. Face painting will be from 1-5 p.m.

There also will be free boxing classes for young Toledoans, food trucks, a DJ, commemorative item sales, a beer garden, and informational displays from all local boxing gyms.

The main event is a live reenactment of a portion of the Willard-Dempsey fight, which begins at 6 p.m. ***

The scheduled events include:

• 1:30-2 p.m.: Soul City Boxing cardio foot drills class.

• 2:30-3 p.m.: Glass City and TBT Boxing motivation and staying active.

• 3:30-4 p.m.: CARTEL boxing class.

• 4-5:30 p.m.: Junior Golden Gloves Amateur Youth Boxing.

• 6 p.m.: live reenactment of the 1919 fight.

*** Gosh I wonder which round; can't find a pic of the re-en-actors yet.

sheyatt seems to have gone by virtually unnoticed by the mainstream press.
Did any former HW Champions show up there in Toeldo on July the 4th ?
(Mike Tyson had once said that Jack Dempsey was one of his idols).
Did any former champions show up at Rushcutters Bay site on the 100th anniversary
of Jack Johnson winning the HW title in 2008 ?

The reenactment

I'm reminded of the Donnelly-Cooper reenactments that used to happen every so often in Donnelly's Hollow at the Curragh of Kildare.

You'd be surprised how many people are "offended" by the presence of our own flag and patriotic music

Also before the fight Major Anthony J. Drexel Biddle and the Marine Corp Marching Band did a Bayonette exhibition
in the center of the ring. The heavy boots tore up the canvas so they had to replace the canvas for the fight.
A.J Biddle was an ecentric millionaire Banker and was known to have been a boxing fan and invited boxers to his mansion
along with invited guests,He sparred with them (Bob Fitzsimmons,Joe Choynski,Al Kaufman (who knocked him out in front of everyone)and then after sparring exhibition everyone had a sumptuous meal.
he was a patron and backer of Philadelphia Jack O'Brien.
he once also sparred with Jack Johnson and reportedly taught boxing to Gene Tunney)
