You can’t compare him to Buchanan and Lynch. Modern boxing is a watered down version of when those 2 were in their prime.

If we’re talking recent times he’ll not be on par with Harrison and Burns but be pretty close to it. Neither of those fighters have any decent Americans on their resume.

Since Ricky spent a lot of his career (some woud say his peak) at super feather, and lightweight, it's not really where American fighters were strong at the time.
Admittedly, his resume at super feather isn't great ;-)
Martinez aside.

Aye but the problem is that unfortunately the depth of the all time list of Scottish boxers is quite thin.

Quite a few old timers who won a world title and maybe defended it once or twice at the most mixed in with modern guys with more defences such as Harrison and Watt and a two weight(I refuse to recognise the third) champion in Burns.

Then Lynch and Buchanan who stand alone at the top.

So it's really hard to rate these guys from different eras. Burns is easily top ten though.

Yep, I agree. Especially about different eras.
And as far as rating Taylor, it's too early in his career for me to even think about it really.
How can one compare to even Burns, when he has to get some credit for longevity, opponents aside. It takes a special something to have an 18 year pro career. Sure he ain't exactly relevant, and hasn't been since Indongo, maybe before, but to hang in for 51- soon to be 52 pro fights has to be taken into consideration when making comparisons to Taylor.

Definitely.

Taylor is a smashing fighter with talent to burn. Much easier on the eye than Harrison and Burns for example. If it was a boxing beauty contest he'd win hands down.

But those guys achieved a lot which some people are underestimating now. Beating Prograis would be a big win and unifying the title a great achievement but let's see how it plays out for Taylor over the next few years before we start measuring him on an all time basis.

But, if he wins tomorrow the sky's the limit. It will be all there for him to make history but let's get through tomorrow first. That's going to be tough.

If Taylor beat Prog, then had a run racking up title defenses vs opponent similar in calibre to Walter Estrada, Samuel Kebede, and William Abylean, then drawing with a so so contender, it wouldn't boost his 'legacy' at all for me. Longevity doesn't mean as much when it's got so many of those fights mixed in. Boxing fans call for quality fights, yet then still talk up total title fight wins as if it's just the number that matters, no matter what the quality.

There is no set amount of fights or years pro someone has to have to be 'in' a discussion for best Scottish fighters--Taylor if he wins, even at 16 fights, is already belonging in the convo of who is ranked.

What if he beat Prograis then got knocked out in a voluntary in his very next fight?

You need to look further than the end of your own nose sometimes.

I'm always reluctant to use Mike Tyson as an example but I'll do it anyway.

A lot of people were saying Tyson was the best ever heavyweight when he unified against Spinks but he just about gets into the top ten in most lists now.

He'd still rate decently due to the magnitude of his wins. Like you yourself said, not like there's big depth for this particular rating.

Not sure why you think it's such a short sighted thing to put JT's accomplishments above Harrison's if JT wins. You seem to think Harrison's career was much more impressive than it was.

Because all time rankings are measured across a number of factors. And being able to perform at a certain level for a reasonable period of time is one of them. I also note you use Harrison's lesser defences as the primary means to make your point.

Also, on a more basic point, do we even know how good Prograis is? As even the Taylor camp have said he hasn't been tested at the top level yet.

Yet on another thread you are suggesting that Lacy was overrated in hindsight so that diminishes Calzaghe's win.

You're just trolling for the most part.

Taylor's already been at a good level, he fought Postal before even getting a title for example. Harrion beating Samuel Kebede means F all more than that even if a title was attached and it runs up some title fight count. Similarly, Harrison being a 2x champ kike you mentioned is another totally superficial thing, because it just means he couldn't get it done the first time. Prog is a very good fresh fighter who easily beat up a decent champ last fight in Relikh, and of course battered Indongo, who played with Ricky Burns shortly before.

Jeff Lacy did nothing impressive before or after Calzaghe. It was no hindsight for me, I called it at the time and after seeing him being thoroughly unimpressive prior to Joe.

LOL, trolling because I disagree with you on this, good ol Ewey

Postal was a good win yeah. So what?

Prograis best 3 wins are probably Indongo, Flanagan and Relikh. OK but not earth shattering. So what?

They've both still got stuff to prove. That's what.

I'm not knocking Taylor by any means. I think he's brilliant to watch. But you're getting well ahead of yourself.

Nope.

I was discussing Ricky Burns with KiwiRider. When you jumped in with your copy and paste from yesterday about Scott Harrison.

Lol, 'those guys' isn't just Ricky Burns. The thread was including ongoing discussion about longevity and number of title defenses, so I brought up relevant points about those. Counting title defenses for just the numbers is obviously hugely flawed of course,

All these threads were you moan about me, yet you are always right here posting continually and dragging it on yourself--just like this . That's our Ewey

There's one thing for certain Prograis is not at the level of Duran or Arguello or Pernell Whittaker ( Jacobs) for that matter !
In the Ring Magazine around 30 years ago they had an article on world flyweight champions. In the next issue someone from America wrote in asking who John Barleycorn was who eventually beat Lynch because he couldn't find any trace of Barleycorn in his records.
