Josh Taylor's chances at WW ?

Post by ValMar »

I predict JT (as almost all other LWW champions) will move up at WW by 2021.
What do you think about his chances to become the champion at WW ?

Tough division currently but who knows in 2021. Ask me then.

You're making me feel guilty now.

OK, he could win a belt at ww but it will be tough judging on the current ww roster.

There is lot of work in 140 for him IMO. Chasing Jose Ramirez fight should be priority.

Definitely. No rush unless the weight becomes an issue. Plenty of good fights at 140

I am joking, I am not too old (like Lennox Lewis, 1965).
I think JT right now has some problems to make weight at LWW. I might be wrong, of course, but he seems to be too big for 140.

The depth of the welters is gonna get deeper and hope that they get both gets a shot. Feels like it is Spence, Porter, Garcia and Thurman fight out a royal rumble that ain't done. Have no clue if Manny is gonna fight Floyd again, it is another easy payday for TBE in my book. Manny looks fit and strong, but Floyd is Floyd.

Then again Welters are always solid and filled with loccos even more when the heavys are back... crazy. Just hoping that Crawford fights somebody from the PBC and yeah, i do see him as the lineal guy since he beat up Horn who got a gift against Manny, how in turn "retired" but still hold on to the WBO belt... I do love this sport and hate it.

Taylor and Prograis both have a solid shot in the toughess division in boxing.

He can become a one of major players there for sure. He has the size and the skills for that. But I'd rather see him fighting Ramirez for the undisputed championship first.

I don't see that Cent :maybe:
Aside from Ramirez, who else?
Catterall isn't ready yet, a rematch with Postol or Prograis isn't that tempting, because there is nothing to gain apart from a payday. Easter Jr is on the up, and that would be interesting I suppose. Ramirez, Prograis and Taylor have collectively cleaned out the division, Taylor would be covering already walked ground.

Hmm fight with Caterral can be big deal for UK fans, or am i wrong?. As you mentioned, Robert Easter is back in game, there are also Pablo Cesar Cano and Jose Zepeda coming from a good wins. Of course there are bigger names in 147, but there is a problem. In 140, Taylor is No.1 now, WBSS winner, with some very respectable wins. He has the belts, everybody want to fight him now. If he moves to 147, with no belts and not being big name in USA, he will be trapped in promotional obstacles and will be fighting B class oponents IMO.
If i was Taylor i would defeinitely stay at 140 and chasing Ramirez fight. Fighting against Catterall, Ulysse or Cano to make some defenses if Ramirez fight would be hard to make. If no other real threat will emerge before 2021, then move up.

I think he can make the transition successfully. He has the height, frame and power for it. As someone mentioned it’s a very tough class right now ( isn’t it always ? ) but if he eases his way in there by fighting a few contenders first he might acclimate nicely to the division.

Probably.
Maybe in a few years, if he really has to move up. Realistically, I think SLW is the right place for him.
Still a very green fighter, who knows how good he will be in a few years and fights. He isn't even 20 fights into his pro career.
Keeping those belts, and trying to unify is the best way to make money for him. Last night won him lots of new fans. Massive exposure.

I could see him holding his own against Danny Garcia or Porter and winning a belt but dont see much hope for him unifying or beating the likes of Crawford. A rematch with Prograis at 147 could be a great fight as well. :box:

Why does a 5',10" SLW try to fight an inside game the entire night as he did against Prograis? Can't see him beating the best WWs like that giving away his game.

I thought he lost against ryan martin.
Rayn was leading on points and wouldve won. Than they made the bu:&&!×;_t stoppage prevent ryan from winning.

He is very good at inside fighting. Ive noticed many users here on boxrec think that tall fighter should not fight inside. Actually tall fighter has some good advantages in close combat, especially if he is going to the body. Middle distance is place where shorter fighter have real advantage

What do you think about his chances to become the champion at WW ?
In the context of what’s likely to occur by the 31st December 2021, it’s hard to envisage Errol Spence Jr. still campaigning at 147lbs and the current crop of top-tier world-rated welterweights would have either retired or will approaching 34 years of age (or even older):

• Terence Crawford (34½ years old)
• Manny Pacquiao (43 years old)
• Keith Thurman (33 years old)
• Shawn Porter (34½ years old)
• Danny Garcia (almost 34 years of age)
• Yordenis Ugas (35½ years old)
• Egidijus Kavaliauskas (33½ years old)
• Sergey Lipinets (almost 33 years of age)

So I feel that Josh Taylor is capable of capturing one of the welterweight title belts, assuming the 147lbs crown is fragmented by then, coupled with the assumption of the Brit being capable of improving and also having competed in far easier bouts than the particularly taxing Regis Prograis fight.

'The Tartan Tornado' will be 31 years of age on that date (on the cusp of turning 32), so his youth gives him a distinct advantage over the guys listed above, but a lot can happen within the next 18 months/two years. So all we can do is guess and see what comes to fruition.

People might laugh at what I’ve written (such as my suggestion that Josh Taylor could eventually become capable of beating a past-his-prime version of Terence Crawford), but let’s not forget that time doesn’t stand still and fighters get progressively worse when they reach a certain age. Father time eventually prevails over all fighters!

Some tall fighters are/were exceptional on the inside. SRR, Hearns, Sadler, Tito are just a few. When a tall fighter is good on the inside, it gives their opponent something to think about. If you are going to get on the inside on these guys, you’re going to have to go through hell to do it. Hearns was a murderous body puncher. If you went on the inside, you were going to pay for that territory. As long as they don’t stay there too long, it’s an incredibly effective way to keep their opponent honest. Taylor was able to make Prograis think twice about it. He landed hurtful body shots throughout the fight. I thought he fought a brilliant fight. Mixed it up well on the inside and from distance.

Yes, Riddick Bowe was devastating on the inside :TU:

To answer the question on JT making it at ww. He’ll certainly be a force to be reckoned with but obviously won’t have the same advantages at 147, that he currently holds.
