How is it possible to give round 1 to Canelo?

If you had exactly the same fight but Canelo fighting Kovalevs fight and visa versus then they would have had Canelo up by around 5 rounds going into the 11th. Canelo fights are so fixed. It’s a real black mark on boxing. All that being said he is a fantastic fighter.

Same way a judge gave round 1 to Canelo in the Khan fight I imagine...

Put Kov under some sustained pressure and he folds. Shame, but that’s always been the case.

Fvck off Canelo.

I disagree, he wasn’t dealing with the pressure which is why it was a matter of time getting stopped. Kov hasn’t got the gas tank, Canelo knew he had to just walk him down and eventually he would fold.

Thought the same thing

But then Taylor last week getting 12 on one scorecard was odd as well

Ward was not big or powerful and whilst both fights were dodgy for different reasons the smaller man was not steam-rollered.
Ward started his career at 168. He is SIGNIFICANTLY larger than Canelo.

I had it 7-3 to Kov. I didn't think the rounds were that close either.

Those punch count stats are comedy gold.

I saw it differently mate. I thought Kov was doing well. Canelo was putting pressure on with the feet but wasn't really letting his hands go enough to really tire Kov. I thought Canelo was a few rounds down at the stoppage

It is absolutely fascinating that so many of the people who care enough about boxing to register and use a boxing forum don't actually know what they are looking at when they watch a contest.

And you're a world renowned authority are you?

A lot of the rounds were close, ckovalev pawed with the jab and threw few power shots, Canelo stalked and landed punches in singles often only a handful per round.

Kov was his own enemy, needed more authority in his shots, but would the judges have recognised it if he had?

I had him ahead by 1 or 2 rounds

I imagine it'd be a lot less than a million if it's going on for this fight, I was just putting that out there as a ‘wouldn't you’ figure. Canelo's worth hundreds of millions from now until the end of his career if he doesn't lose. At what point does ‘gets every advantage’ cross over into outright corruption?
Dave Morretti was a judge last night. He has judged over 1,000 contests. With all these bribes he must be worth millions and millions of dollars.

There were a lot of close rounds, but it's ridiculous how Canelo always gets the benefit of the doubt.

Kovalev needed to fight with a lot more authority if he wanted to get the nod.

I don't think there are overt bribes, it's just judges know that if they want to get high profile gigs, it's in their interest to favour the big promoters fighters.

Oyf what a KO from Alvarez, buckled Kovalev's knees with a left hook and the right hand put him to sleep, about a conclusive as it gets, I loved the fight, it wasnt a barnstormer but it was still a great watch, I had it even going into the 11th, a lot of pick em rounds where it was what you prefer, Kovalev had the quantity peppering away with the jab and Alvarez had the quality, his shots were always more eye catching especially the first half of the fight

I fancied Alvarez to win late but I thought it would be a case of him breaking Kovalev down, mainly to the body but although Canelo did target the body on occasion it didn't look a massive part of the gameplan, Kovalev was always the busier guy but Canelo blocked most of his punches, Canelo for his part didn't have the highest workrate and went through a few plodding spells and I thought after the middle rounds Kovalev finally started to land and sit down on his punches as opposed to just jabbing, it actually looked to me as if Alvarez was feeling things a bit and Kovalev looked like the guy in the driving seat, Alvarez was still always dangerous with the big left hooks and lead rights but Kovalev hadn't looked badly effected and as I said I thought he was starting to impose himself on the fight, still what a finish from Alvarez right out of nowhere, top drawer KO and totally wiped Kovalev out

Alvarez, the former light Middleweight and middleweight, looked to be the puncher in the fight against the light heavyweigh, which I thought was interesting. I've no idea how he has managed to keep his power as he has gone up the weights. It's funny how all the top fighters based in America are able to seamlessly go up the weights, whilst most fighters in other countries tend to struggle when they go up in weight.

does he stay put at light heavy?

going back to super middle is certainly easier pickings.

golovkin at catchweight is bigger than saunders/smith.

reckon they might have to fight each other (saunders-smith).

Kov was boxing to a plan to a tee - he was spot on with his jabbing and footwork which rendered Canelo to landing single shots to the body with the occasional head shot getting through and not being able to get in any cominations in - Canelo didn't look too frustrated as he seemed to be biding his time but I thought he was just going to run out of time or realised his great friends - the judges - had his back. Still, the ending removed any contreversey from him being a worthy winner.

I thought he looked very small at light heavyweight and someone a bit fresher than Kovalev would just keep him on the end of a jab for 12 rounds which Kovalev would have done a few years ago. Canelo is best off moving back down in weight. He really did look like a pumped up welterweight in there.

Teddy Atlas described the situation really well in an interview a while back. The promoter (or members of his company) often wine and dine the officials and representatives of the governing bodies the night before. He described other practices that go on, in what was a really frank interview. If I find it, I'll post it.
