A J bringing in Fernandez

Post by dbf »

What do people think of this addition to AJ's team? He's a young (ish) coach who worked under Jorge Rubio (of Haye, Amir Khan and Luke Campbell fame) and also Salas. He's relatively unknown but is currently training Isaac Chamberlain.

From the outside he looks like a pad man but I could be wrong. What benefit is this going to bring to AJ and how will McCraken really feel about it? Remember the days when Hatton brought in Lee Beard to do his pads as Billy Grahams arms were no longer up to it? That didn't end to well for the Hatton Graham relationship (although I concede it was only one factor from what I have read).

It surprises me that AJ has brought in a relative unknown, especially when if he wanted to he could have reached out to anyone. I was expecting Jonathon Banks to pop up in some kind of role but this seems a little weird.

Kind of what I thought. Also just a bit odd given he's quite unknown and unproven,

It might be just for this fight. A fresh face can be good. If he was going to running the training/corner, then I'd be concerned.

I’ve been doing this for about 12+ yrs tbh, From my professional point of view and own experience it is always better I find to get someone else to do the pads to your instructions whilst you sit back and observe what you’ve been working on and game plan etc has you see more faults and can correct things easier from the outside watching that you don’t always see or find whilst your doing the pad work yourself and caught in the moment, it’s a very fine detail and imo it’s very helpful, especially for fights of this magnitude, obviously if that’s what he’s been brought in for

Latest clips on Sky Boxing Youtube channel show AJ doing pads with Fernandez, working with a wrestling coach (!) and Jonathon Banks giving orders from ringside. This could cause chaos on the night and I'm sure McCraken is not happy with this set up?

Sounds like wanting to get lots of different inputs which suggests to me a lack of real confidence. McCracken won't be happy with it, wouldn't surprise me to see them part ways afterwards, whatever the result.

Exactly what I was thinking mate. It definitely suggests desperation. The corner could be a mess on the night and I'm sure McCraken is severely pissed off by this. Banks is a calm voice but he will have his differing opinions. Fernandez's confidence must be high as a novice coach being singled out by AJ to come in and do pads, suggests to me that someone is in AJ's ear. This could get messy.

It was always his plan though.

When he was interviewed a wee while after the defeat he said that the answer to defeat was to bring more people in. Along the lines of "if just Rob and I can achieve what we've achieved so far just think what we can do with more people on board"

True, he did say that, but seeing it in reality makes me wonder why? Does he not fully believe in McCraken, has he been swayed by style over substance (pads) or was it just a knee jerk reaction to his first loss?

I thought his theory was flawed personally

Honestly, I don’t see any issue. The old days of one coach, one boxer maybe need a freshen up at that level. Not every coach is the same. It’s good to have opposing views & methods. I suspect old Wlad has been singing Banks praises. He’ll not dump Rob, but there really is not harm in a bigger team.

The problem is when their opinions differ on fight night.
