Let us imagine the neutral venue (Japan) and the referee and the judges from Japan, too.
Who wins ? How ?

Smells more like mythical fights than Current Scene, lad.

Calzaghe is a terrible match for canelo. Hes too active and throws at angles

Calzaghe was too fast, too busy and too adaptable; plus he had phenomenal stamina, so he wouldn't wilt like Kovalev for example.
Calzaghe UD.
Calzaghe UD.

Calzaghe, fairly repetitively.
The one thing that was never apparent during his career, was 'how do you beat him?'. I don't think he had any controversial vistories. Mayweather had Castillo and Maidana that were *very* close, but Calzaghe?
Wide 12 round decision for me, Canelo is almost tailor-made for him, his foot speed is glacially slow. Hands quick, yes, but he wouldn't be able to get his punches off.

Robin Reid ran him very close.matthewcb wrote: ↑05 Nov 2019, 12:08 Calzaghe, fairly repetitively.

Good as Canelo is, I'd pick calzaghe all day long, phenomenal work rate and variety of shots, and a great chin.

Bernard Hopkins and Robin Reid were very controversial victories for Joe Calzaghe.
I'm sure the Sky Sports commentators stated that they thought The Executioner deserved the victory. And Joe never granted Reid a well-deserved rematch.
We also need to remember that Joe Calzaghe was hurt on numerous occasions and was also decked against the likes of Kabary Salem, Byron Mitchell, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
I’m not meaning to be disrespectful, but he beat past-his prime versions of Chris Eubank Jr. (who was weight-drained and took the fight at short-notice), Bernard Hopkins and a completely shot Roy Jones Jr.
And in my mind, Mikkel Kessler hadn’t quite reached his peak when he faced Joe. And Jeff Lacy was never that good in the first place, since he was simply a product of media hype.
Anybody thinks that Joe Calzaghe was unbeatable hasn’t watched enough of his bouts.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Joe, he’s definitely a worthy Hall-of-Famer, but his title-reign wasn’t anywhere near as dominant as many believe to be.

Off topic, but I had to say : Yes, Mayweather had Castillo, but he won Maidana, clearly.matthewcb wrote: ↑05 Nov 2019, 12:08 Calzaghe, fairly repetitively.

calzaghe would throw twice as much as canelo and either wear him out or win by a clear margin

36 year old Kovalev looked good against Canelo with his economical style. Calzaghe would frustrate Canelo with his speed and workrate. No one would probably get hurt, but Calzaghe would outscore Canelo.

Canelo via controversial decision.
Who are we kidding. If it goes to the scorecard ms, he wins.

Calzaghe too busy for Canelo, JC on points. I don't think we ever really saw the best of Calzaghe either, he was blighted with hand problems his entire career, including as an amateur.

No body said Kessler was yet to reach his peak and nobody said Lacy was shite until Calzaghe beat both.I watched almost all of his fights and yes he came close a couple of times to being beaten, the fact is he wasn't,so until someone of his standing was beaten then he was unbeatable surely ?
Re: The fantasy match - Calzaghe (2007) vs. Canelo (2019) at SMW ?
Those considerations are exactly germane to fantasy matches, though.

The way to beat him is right hand counters to deter his offense and try backing him up. Hopkins had the perfect gameplan but ran out if gas late. I'd favor ward against him because he was great at that and if the ref let him get away with fouling forget about it
I dont think froch could beat him but hed have a chance with how strong and awkward he was. That's another way to have a chance
If you come straight at him good luck it's going to be a long night
