Lamon Brewster and Kali Meehan were good friends so to their wifes the kids use to call the parents uncle and aunty i heard during their WBO Heavyweight Title fight from one of the commentators Meehan broke Brewsters jaw in round 8 but Lamon won a Split Dec i think they trained together when Kali was in the states

Frazier/Ali?

During Ali's exile, Frazier & he were buddies of sorts

Joe used to drive him places & even gave him money to tide him over during his exiled years, then when Ali returned, he was very derogatory towards Frazier.

This is part of the reason why Joe claimed to despise Muhammad, even I'm not convinced he disliked Ali as much as he made out he did.

This is the one I alway's think of when this subject is brought up
They were best friends... Simon and Maurice, along with their wife's, spent every Sunday together for dinner at each others homes.
I remember them being interviewed before hand and they said they still loved each other but this was a unification fight and was thus their biggest pay day at the time.
They went on to beat the shite out of each other with Simon showing no mercy!!!

The guy who mentioned John Henry Lewis was spot on.
Lewis had medical issues with bills piling up, he was a Light Heavy so making no money there. Joe louis gave him a good payday but also took him out in one round to save Lewis from taking a beating.

Speaking of Louis and friendship. Him and Schmeling were supposed to hate each other but when Louis was in the hospital and had massive money problems, Schmeling visited him and quietly paid for all Joe's medical bills...

I mentioned Lewis and Louis. I read the story as a kid and for some reason, it really stuck with me. It taught me a lot about helping people, and never being sure what's happening in a person's life...and yes...it was merciful! I remember the overhead picture of Louis standing over a just fallen Lewis.

Donald Curry and Milton McCrory were friends since their amateur days. As well as Greg Page and Tony Tubbs.

Holyfield would be honored as the Best Man at Tillman's wedding.

But first he beat up Tillman in 1987 in a cruiserweight championship bout, stopping Tillman in 7 one sided rounds.
Aren't Holyfield and Bowe godparents to each other's kids?

Brewster commented that he didn't have a killer instinct that fight because he really cared for Kali.

So much behind the scenes history with those two:

- Joe visits Max in the hosiptal after their fight (Joe cracked two of Max's vertebrae)

- Max having breakfast with Hitler before flying to the US to fight. On the plane, he helps Jewish kids escape Germany by sneaking them on.

- Hitler was so pissed that Max lost that he drafted Max into being a paratrooper. Imagine that, a heavyweight with two broken vertebrae jumping out of a plane during WWII. Max survives and opens a Coca-Cola distribution plant in post-war Germany and makes millions.

- Max flies back to the US many times for work, and plays golf with Joe until both are old men. Joe was quite the golfer.

- Max becomes a pallbearer for Joe at his funeral.

I remember this. Snr looks like a sack of Mellon pulp, shouldn’t have been allowed.

Gatti v Ward. They were close.
Were Gatti and Ward really close before their trilogy? Or did respect and friendship evolve from their in-ring rivalry?

Could have sworn I read an article in Sports Illustrated after their first fight that both Gatti and Ward knew that night that they engaged in something special. They were put in hospital beds in the same room during their post-fight check up. Battered, one of them got up to leave and said "Hey, I love you" to the other (I think Ward said it first). Both knew they brought out the best of each other.

With that said, I found Ward vs. Burton was even better.

Bruce Curry and Monroe Brooks were publicized as friends and roommates, which they were. But, the word in the gym at the time was that they are actually cousins.
