Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
really enjoyed the interview but found it weird there was zero mention of the AAA fight, one of the best British fights of all time and his defining moment in the ring!

Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
True, a classic, maybe John thought it’d been talked about enough already
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
Maybe he did...but that's the first serious mention of Gomez in BN for years (as far as I can remember) and younger readers may have no idea of the AAA fight. Just thought it was worth a line, that's all.
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
I'm still scarred from that fight
Good article. Nice to see Gomez at peace after such a mad life.

It was a very honest piece. The fact he now suffers from a neurodegenerative disease due to boxing is very sad. It usually will progress to dementia. Howard Clarke is another sufferer. I wonder how he's doing lately?
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
It was inevitable Gomez was going to be severely damaged. Brian Hughes wanted him to quit after the bognar defeat if I remember. He took some serious punishment. Glad he's at least settled.
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
I heard a few stories about Gomez in his wild days and they make your eyes water a little. As for Carl, he was smart because he always took long rests between his wars and was able to keep going into his 40s. Two rugged, dangerous blokes with potent power.

I spoke to Arv Mittoo a few months ago, Howard is struggling a fair bit.polecateddy wrote: ↑09 Nov 2019, 21:09 It was a very honest piece. Fighters I know who are bananas thought that Gomez was damn bananas. Only Blue boy Gallagher and Richie Evatt were talked about in the same way!
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
I watched Gomez get knocked out cold while he was drunk and destroyed on sniff in a pub in Collyhurst back in the day. Very sad to see. He was an absolute warrior.
Re: Great BN interview with Michael Gomez
I never particularly warmed to Gomez, but he was in some very good fights.
He did make me laugh the time he had a TV mic put in front of him and asked if he had heard about the rumour he could be fighting Amir Khan, and quick as flash in typical Gomez fashion barked " yeah, I have....I started the rumour "
The big win over Alex Arthur was his crowning glory for sure, but I also remember the inexperienced Kevin Lear having none of Gomez's bully boy tactics and duly administered him with a proper thumping.

Yes, Islington's Patrick "Blue Boy" Gallagher (not to be confused with PJ) committed some horrendous crimes and wasted his undoubted boxing talent. He won the ABA lightweight title in 1990 with an upset decision over Billy Schwer at a packed Albert Hall, having got a second chance after Fisher's Martin Harley, who beat him the London finals, had to withdraw from the championships through injury. Gallagher later turned pro but his career was stop-start and he managed 13 fights in 10 years as a pro.
Evatt, who won the ABA bantamweight title in 1993 and featured in several big fights in the pros, never got over the end of his boxing career and descended into alcoholism, crime and homelessness. He died in a homeless shelter in Coventry.
