John Joe Nevin
Very inactive, what's the story with him? A highly decorated amateur boxer, Olympic silver medalist in 2012, two times world championship bronze medalist, European gold medalist and undefeated as a pro 13-0 but now aged 30 and a pro for 5 years without making any real waves or progress. Why so slow in the pro ranks?

This will sound crazy if I’m wrong, but didn’t he get kneecapped?
Wasn’t there an Irish lad who started a pro career well then got sidelined with something like that?

No mate, much more recent. Its proving hard to google
Re: John Joe Nevin
He had his leg broken in a feud with a few traveller families

That was back in 2014 though. After he recovered I think he went to America to try and build a career without the aggro of being back home

He's fighting Freddy Fonseca, Francisco Fonseca's older brother.

He's not been that inactive. His opposition has been dreadful though, why's such a decorated amateur still fighting people with losing records after 12 fights? Would've learned more staying amateur

He has, one fight in 2016, one in 2017, two in 2018 and two so far in 2019, not that great.danconnollyeire wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 08:36 He's not been that inactive. Meh it's pretty average for modern day boxers... not enough I agree but not that surprisingControversial wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 08:50He has, one fight in 2016, one in 2017, two in 2018 and two so far in 2019, not that great.danconnollyeire wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 08:36 He's not been that inactive. Re: John Joe Nevin
sounds like a tinker to me
Re: John Joe Nevin
Its a shame for whatever reason his pro career has been so slow, because he was a excellent amateur. He looked a special talent at the Olympucs 2012, his performance against a top Cuban in the semi finals was brilliant. Hopefully a top promoter signs him soon and speeds up his progress.

Re: John Joe Nevin
Thought his punch output was poor last night, he's got superb moves, was sharp in the early going , but just didn't throw enough to go to top level.
Maybe he's stuck in that amateur scoring way of thinking.

Re: John Joe Nevin
Nevin is and was super talented. Getting on a bit now as a pro from the lighter divisions. I just see that his personal life is a total mess. When he was in the Olympics his father was recorded in the middle of a traveller riot throwing stones and swinging a golf club. On his return John Joe and his wife were in court for collecting money as false charity collectors and he had his leg broken by somebody in some sort of row. Very talented, if lacking punching power, super boxer mover but a real mess outside of the ring.
Re: John Joe Nevin
He's obviously very well schooled, as you would expect from such decorated amateur beat Fonseca comfortably, but he had 'going through the motions' look about him sometimes.
The right hand that he sliced right through Fonseca's guard and put him down was pure class.

This probably explains it all, another one to add to the list of unfulfilled talents.Dornalai wrote: ↑18 Nov 2019, 09:18 Nevin is and was super talented. Nevin fought above in November 2019 and nothing since, still unbeaten in 14 but will be 32 next year so time running out.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 07:53 He's fighting Freddy Fonseca, Francisco Fonseca's older brother.

'Shameful' is a more fitting word. That's pretty low, isn't it?dookus wrote: ↑07 Dec 2020, 12:05Shame.Dornalai wrote: ↑18 Nov 2019, 09:18 Nevin is and was super talented.
