Re: Best Three Wins @ Heavyweight
Larry Holmes had some decent wins too...
Ken Norton
A wayyyyyy past his prime Muhammad Ali
Trevor Berbick
Mike Weaver x2
James Smith x2
Leon Spinks
Tim Witherspoon...
Gerry Cooney
Ossie Ocasio (world Cruiserweight champ)
Ray Mercer
Obviously nothing like say, Holyfield's trifecta over Foreman, Tyson and Bowe but still....

Moorer maybe. I liked Lyle.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑12 Nov 2019, 19:51How bout Michael Moorer instead of Lyle?
(you could arguably also put in Gerry Cooney instead of Lyle)

But, Joe Louis got some also nice wins:
WKO13 Billy Conn
WTKO1 Max Schmeling (II)
WKO8 Jersey Joe Walcott (II)
W10 Jimmy Bivins
Bob Fitzsimmons
Joe Jeannette
Also:
Stanley Ketchel
James J. Jeffries
Tommy Burns
A great resume by the great Jack Johnson. I rate him at #3 at all-time heavyweight rankings. What a great fighter!

How come?

Re: Best Three Wins @ Heavyweight
Styles make fights. Foreman didn't even try to box then and Shavers wasn't an ingenious boxer at all. While Ali actually toyed with Lyle like a cat with a mouse. Lyle was outclassed by the likes of Quarry and Young. He would be no match for the likes of Klitschko. Klitschko at least could jab and land one-twos. Lyle wouldn't even get close and if he would, he wouldn't hurt Vitali because of his freakish chin.

Styles don't make fight's, they can only influence them.
Ali didn't toy with Lyle. Lyle was actually winning the fight when it was stopped.
Klitshcko's freakish chin? It's not like it was tested over and over. 6 rounds against an out of shape Lewis is about all we have to go on.
His jab and one-two? Please.
Klitschko had two relevant fights in his whole career. Couldn't go the distance either time. Lyle not only beat Shavers but also Bugner, who was a much better boxer than Kltischko ever dreamed of being.

Re: Best Three Wins @ Heavyweight
Lyle was winning the fight, because Ali gave him an opportunity to work. It can be compared with Ali-Foreman. While Klitshcko's chin was also tested by Sanders, who was about the same slugger, as Shavers had been. Sanders was even faster FFS. And Bugner was so damn good, that he lost every f*ckin' fight to a top opponent. Even his win over old slugger Cooper is highly arguable. However, the most epic stuff here is your trademark criticism of Klitschko for Byrd loss. You mention it in every f*cking discussion of Klitschko. "Couldn't go the distance". As if Byrd made him to do it.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 11:58Styles don't make fight's, they can only influence them.

Tested by Sanders? Sander's entire reputation as a "slugger" is his stoppage of Wladimir, who had a weak chin. Most of his career he was considered a joke. Sanders does not remotely compare to Earnie Shavers.
Yes I bring up the Byrd fight when people bring up Vitaly? Why? Because it's relevant. Instead of toughing it out, he quit like a dog. (He also looked like crap in a terrible fight.) So yeah, it counts.
Bugner lost every big fight except for Cooper? Maybe. He did have several decent wins. Klitschko never won a big fight. Never went the distance in a big fight. Btw Bugner gave Frazier a tough fight. Went the distance with Ali twice.
Besides, aren't we talking about Lyle here? Lyle beat Shavers, and he beat Bugner. Both those are much better than anyone Klitschko ever beat.

The dude's speaking as if he'd never seen the actual fight between Lyle and Ali. I watched it live and Lyle was winning. He was at his best that night. And I'm an Ali lover!Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑13 Nov 2019, 16:42 tested by Sanders? Sander's entire reputation as a "slugger" is his stoppage of Wladimir, who had a weak chin.
