Great Fighters Who Staged One Last Great Effort
Great Fighters Who Staged One Last Great Effort
Watching Donaire's effort against Inoue got me thinking about great fighters who made unexpected last great stands against a top opponent they were expected to lose to, win or lose.
Two that spring to mind are Ezzard Charles versus Marciano and Erik Morales against Maidana, any others?

Monzon v Valdez in his final fight
Re: Great Fighters Who Staged One Last Great Effort
Meh...wasn't really unexpected was it? Monzon was the favorite.

Duran vs Barkley might be more fitting but considering his age and the style he was facing the first Camacho fight was excellent.

Erik Morales vs Marcos Maidana
Wlad's effort vs Anthony Joshua I'd say counts
We may be saying this about Pac vs Thurman in the not too distant future, but the Pacman ain't done just yet.

SR Leonard against Duran III
I'd say Hearns II which obviously was a heck of a lot better fight but he just dominated Duran.

It's an excellent win but the fight was so bad and Montiel froze so bad that I'd be hesitant to put it up there as much as I like Too Sharp.

Nelson had plenty of great efforts left in him even after that. He subsequently stopped both Gabe Ruelas and Jesse James Leija in very solid performances.
So this fit the category when it happened but didn't end up being "one last great effort".

Edwin Rosario vs Loreto Garza was a "blast from the past" at a point when Edwin was completely cooked.
