Alexander Povetkin vs Michael Hunter confirmed for AJ bill
Povetkin vs Hunter on same bill as Ruiz Jr-Joshua rematch on December 7, live on Sky Sports Box Office
Alexander Povetkin collides with Michael Hunter in an explosive heavyweight clash on the same bill as Anthony Joshua's huge rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.
Joshua aims to regain the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight belts from Ruiz Jr on December 7, live on Sky Sports Box Office, with three more major fights confirmed ahead of the massive main event in Saudi Arabia.
Former world champion Scott Quigg also faces Jono Carroll in a super-featherweight showdown, while there is more heavyweight action when the highly-rated Filip Hrgovic meets Eric Molina.
Dangerous Russian veteran Povetkin will add another significant victory to his résumé if he can dispatch Hunter following his recent points victory over Hughie Fury.
"Hunter is a strong, highly ranked boxer," said Povetkin. "I think it will be a good and interesting fight. I'm not going to make any plans for the next year, first I have to go through this fight against Hunter, but I would definitely like to box for a world title."
Former cruiserweight Hunter has already beaten two Russians in Alexander Ustinov and Sergey Kuzmin, and now enters his toughest test as a heavyweight.
"I look at this fight with Povetkin as my 'gold medal' fight," said Hunter. "I was in the Olympics and so was he, he won the gold medal and I didn't, so this is basically my gold medal fight right here. I am always pushing for the KO.
"I thrive on making guys quit, so I'm definitely going to push for it. I am a boxer first though and I'm certainly going to be boxing his shoes off. If I see any quit in him, then I am going to take advantage of that."
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said: "Three great fights for what is the boxing event of the year!
"The world will stop on December 7 to watch Andy Ruiz Jr versus Anthony Joshua 2 - and now they have more mouthwatering action to whet the appetite.
"Povetkin against Hunter is a brilliant match-up, with both men looking for a crack at a world heavyweight title in 2020. Unbeaten Filip Hrgovic makes his first step up against former world title challenger Eric Molina.
"In a thrilling domestic battle, Scott Quigg takes on Jono Carroll in what will be a high paced all-action war. There's more to come soon on a night that will go down in history."
Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: "Anthony Joshua's rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr will capture the attention of the boxing world - and we have an action-packed bill ahead of a massive main event.
"Expect fireworks when Alexander Povetkin is pitted against Michael Hunter, a fearless American contender, while Croatia's Filip Hrgovic will be keen to show why he is considered the dangerman in the top division.
"The exciting duo of Scott Quigg and Jono Carroll should also guarantee a frenetic encounter on a momentous night for AJ as he attempts to regain his world heavyweight titles."

Anthony Joshua adds new coach for Andy Ruiz Jr. Saudi Arabia rematch
Joshua remained loyal to Team GB Head of Boxing Robert McCracken due to their history. But has now decided to add another face to the staff. That’s where it’s believed Angel Fernandez will step in and take some of the slack from McCracken.
The pair will are set to work with Joshua in Saudi Arabia to formulate a plan to reclaim the titles. Fernandez has worked with Joshua’s compatriot Isaac Chamberlain and Kazakh world champion elect Sultan Zaurbek. The London-based coach has also got ties to the Women’s GB Team with Sandy Ryan.

Well, ppl have questioned Ruiz's mindset now that he's gotten big money etc. But on the other hand, if he loves DAT MONEY, then winning the rematch is the best way to get more. He certainly looks like he's been training and not pigging out compared to what we've previously seen. His weight will be interesting.

I saw an youtube video earlier where Holyfield was being interviewed, he said he sparred Ruiz when Ruiz was 19 (apparently he got the age wrong and Ruiz was in fact 21) but he said he knew he could never beat him and that's why he decided to retire. Holyfield was obviously past it at that stage but still boxing professionally.

There's a video of Holyfield sparring Ruiz Jr., which was taken from 2011, meaning that 'The Real Deal' would have been on the cusp of turning 49 years of age when they shared the ring with each other during Evander's final training camp.Controversial wrote: ↑07 Nov 2019, 12:35 I saw an youtube video earlier where Holyfield was being interviewed, he said he sparred Ruiz when Ruiz was 19 (apparently he got the age wrong and Ruiz was in fact 21) but he said he knew he could never beat him and that's why he decided to retire. To be fair, Holyfield’s comments about Ruiz Jr’s performance against him during sparring seem overly-generous and perhaps too flattering… and this from someone that has always been a big fan of Andy, because Evander said that the Mexican-American was “amazingly quick” and always “got the better of him”, but that isn’t how things transpired in their training camp videos.

I think Ruiz Jr will win, but I think it will be via DQ, as Joshua has a history of rule bending once he's in trouble.
I hope this is a clean fight. I have my doubts it will be.

DIRIYAH ARENA READY FOR CLASH ON THE DUNES ACTION

An iconic fight needs a spectacular venue and few can compare to the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia which is now ready for a historic night as the Clash On The Dunes sees World Champion Andy Ruiz Jr take on Anthony Joshua.
Earlier this week, Joshua promised the world an “iconic evening of boxing” as he flew into the Kingdom ahead of the epic bout on December 7.
The first-ever Heavyweight World Title fight to take place in the Middle East will be staged in the custom-built 15,000 seat Diriyah Arena in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the home of heroes and kings.
Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Boxing, said: “The arena and site are utterly breath-taking, with a theme park and concert the night before as well. It’s like nothing we’ve seen before in boxing. The Clash On The Dunes will be a night to remember. We can’t wait.”
The Diriyah Arena has been constructed by 175 staff working tirelessly to transform the 10,000 sq m site, which includes 295 tonnes of steel, which would stretch 57km. Work began on October 7, just two months out, with 3,000 sqm of scaffolding needed to complete the work.
On the night more than 2,000 staff will ensure proceedings run smoothly in the arena, 95 percent of which is reusable, and which will take a month to take down.
Joshua will be looking to regain his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO belts after suffering defeat to Ruiz in New York earlier this year, but the British Heavyweight will have the backing of thousands of UK fans joining boxing enthusiasts from more than 60 countries across the world.
Fans will approach the Diriyah Arena via the Diriyah Oasis, a huge sprawling entertainment hub which includes ice-skating outdoors, sky diving, jetski-ing and ziplining among a host of activities on offer. The Diriyah Oasis is split into the four zones – Nature, Imagination, Reflection, Excitement- giving families a place to come together, and at its heart lies an astonishing grand installation by world-renowned Italian artist, Edoardo Tresoldi.
The Clash On The Dunes forms part of the Diriyah Season, epic month of sports which kicked off with Formula E at the weekend, the Diriyah Tennis Cup featuring eight of the best men’s players on the planet, and the Diriyah Equestrian Festival, an elite competition with Tokyo Olympics 2020 qualifying points on the line.
The Diriyah Season is also supported by the Diriyah Music Festival with huge concerts taking place around the event. On December 6, the night before the Clash On The Dunes, major artists who are yet to be announced will perform. So far artists such as Imagine Dragons, DJ Alan Walker, Clean Bandit and Maluma have performed to 40,000 concert goers.
Tickets for all of the Diriyah Season’s spectacular events, concerts and entertainment will be available at www.diriyahseason.sa. Follow Diriyah Season’s news and announcements on the official social media pages on twitter and Instagram @diriyahseason.
