Re: Teofimo Lopez vs. Richard Commey - December 14, 2019
Only watched a tiny bit of Lopez earlier today, and I don't know if I was just looking for some reason to go against the majority on PTBF, but I don't like how much weight he seems to have on his back foot - seems like it makes it harder for him to step back quickly. Helps his pocket counter-punching I suppose but might be a problem if Commey can time him onto the end of his longer power.
Maybe he was just fighting guys whose power he didn't respect and if I'd watched more I'd have known that he has more versatility to his style, I don't know. Gave me some Broner vibes though (probably not the first to say that?) either way.

Many fans hate his cockiness. Fight time!margaret thatcher wrote: ↑14 Dec 2019, 23:14You think Teo already has a bunch of haters? TBH people mostly rate him highlySenorPipino wrote: ↑14 Dec 2019, 23:08
Coming up in minutes. I suspect that even when Lopez wins, plenty fans will still say they're not sold on him.
They'll probably point to Commey's age and say "So what? He's old."
That's how it usually works.

Well that was about as easy and convincing as I suspected it would be.
Once Lopez hurt Commey, the African didn't have the know how or mobility to survive.
Did you blink?

I love Teofimo, but Lomachenko is a completely different fighter from Commey.
Lopez would have to deal with quickness, movement and angles. Something Commey didn't bring to the dance.
I'd want Lopez to get more seasoning before getting into the ring with an experienced, talented fighter who can frustrate you all night long.

Yeah, Loma has a complete different style and is levels above Commey. And Lopez too. So this spectacular KO doesn't tell much.SenorPipino wrote: ↑14 Dec 2019, 23:47I love Teofimo, but Lomachenko is a completely different fighter from Commey.

I think Richard Commey was not the only one surprised by Lopez's power last night. I certainly was. As you rightly said, Commey had no alternative strategy.
To make things worse for the unlucky Commey, Lopez was taking his shots well. Hardly fazed in fact, and Commey is not feather fisted. Lopez looked bigger and stronger and as was said earlier, leans on his back foot to generate power. But quickly too.
As for Loma next, why not? Lopez will do no worse than Crolla or Campbell. In fact Loma might do well to take on Lopez now rather than wait a year or two.
So congrats for calling it out right.
Good tactical understanding when what you see happening actually plays out before your eyes.
Even better when it's the result you wanted.
Tough road back for Commey, but the Teofimo Lopez bandwagon is most definitely rolling again.

I can see where you're coming from but even if Loma proves to be too much too soon for Lopez, it would be no surprise if Teo went on to be a P4P great and future HOFer like Canelo has after getting dominated by Mayweather when he fought him too early in his career. Canelo's ambitious move has shown that early losses to ATGs like Floyd dont necessarily hinder your development as a fighter. If more young fighters followed that blueprint it would be good for the sport.SenorPipino wrote: ↑14 Dec 2019, 23:47 I love Teofimo, but Lomachenko is a completely different fighter from Commey.

Either Nakatani was on his best night, or Teofimo just fooled us again. He vastly deserves this chance, more than Garcia, Haney and Davis.

Any Ghanian not named Azumah Nelson is tailor-made for a fighter like Lopez.... pretty surprised so many people in PTBF had him possibly winning. He seems like a true warrior type of dude with tons of heart, but when your are faced with a fighter with TRUE, NATURAL 1 punch KO power, you have to be able to make adjustments. Those “uncrackable” skulls seem to be becoming less and less....prolly for the best.

Serious power with compact punches...and he's accurate!
Every fighter can be neutralized and Loma can befuddle even the best fighters, but Lopez looks like a major talent to me.

You know, I wanted to write a long post about styles and Loma's spectacular ability and I can certainly see Loma's style giving Lopez fits. But, looking at this fight, I don't see any reason not to give Lopez a very real shot. There are some guys who have had success against Loma, guys who I think are not as dangerous as Lopez. Couple that fact with the fact that Loma has battled injuries some say, and his recent opposition hasn't been so formidable, and it becomes a very 50/50 proposition for me.
Sorry for the cop out, I tend to like analyzing fights more than predicting them.
Gun to my head, I'll take Loma, I just can't fully go with the youngster against such a difficult style.
You think Lopez can knock him out? That would be pretty spectacular.
