Juan Manuel Marquez vs Joel Casamayor



Marquez stops Casamayor in the 11th of a non title Lightweight contest, excellent finish from Marquez, showed real power and precision, it was a chess match between two counter punchers, both men having their best success with the back hand, Casamayor the southpaw left and Marquez the right cross, the first half of the fight pretty much every round was tight as it gets but Marquez started to separate himself by getting off some classy combinations and again with the right hand

Casamayor was still making a fight of it though and worked the jab pretty well but after having his best spell in a while in the 9th, the following round Marquez was having his best spell and was upping the tempo, still the first knockdown in the 11th was out of nowhere, Marquez dropping Casamayor with a textbook looping right hand which hurt him pretty bad, he got up and tried to hold and spoil but Marquez wasn't having any of it, he broke free, turned Casamayor on the ropes and let go both hands and was accurate, a final right hand sent Casamayor down again and the ref waved it off without a count

One of the best fights I've seen for (both) fighters countering-the-counter-to-the counter (to the counter,etc). You can see them thinking 2 and three steps ahead, the ring IQ and tactical adjustments on display were off the charts here.

100% mate, if it happened tomorrow i'd imagine it'd get slated or called boring but like yourself I loved it, stopping Joel Casamayor aint easy

Francesco Damiani vs Johnny DuPlooy

1989 fight, for the inaugural WBO heavyweight title. Quiet opening round, followed by a more interesting second where Damiani demonstrated nice defensive skills negating DuPlooy's scary looking punches. Third round saw the classic Johnny DuPlooy unraveling; Damiani lands a few clean shots and the South African collapses wrecked to the canvas.

Reg Gutteridge mentioned that DuPlooy had been training on Carnaby Street--does Bennie or anyone know where on Carnaby Street boxers could train in the 1980s? Over a pub or something?

An interesting fight. mate

DuPlooy looked like a cruder version of Sanders before Corrie had really arrived.....a very fast, aggressive starter who bombed away (often with some success) and had no Plan B if he could not drop someone in the first quarter of the fight.

Predictably when DuPlooy and Sanders did meet they did not mess about.....over quickly.

Some of those big SA heavyweights beyond Coetzee and Sanders were a proper handful...….if you take a closer look at DuPlooy's record it stacks up pretty well. What the hell he was doing on Carnaby Street is anyone's guess

Robert Guerrero vs Joel Casamayor



Guerrero soundly outpoints Casamayor over 10 rounds in a non title Super Lightweight fight, both men were down but it was a bit of a bore TBH, Casamayor lost a point in the 2nd for holding then was put down from a right hand later in the round, he was shook from a right initially before another one had him scrambling to stay on his feet before going down, it then turned into a snoozer, Guerrero was winning pretty much everything but wouldn't really force the issue despite steading Casamayor with the left hand a few times throughout, Casamayor just didn't have it anymore to trouble Guerrero but still had enough experience to easily survive

Bit of a shock in the last round when Casamayor put Guerrero down with a jab but he never looked like getting him out of there and Guerrero won clearly on points

- 250 lb tub of Weeks fell atop of Casa to prevent him from rising from a disputed draw on the cards.

This the same BALCO Juan allowed to rise 3x in the first Manny fight. Casa was the WBC champ should of been granted the same respect and is clearly POed over the results.

This was an early phase of JMM golden boy promotions that earned he, Barrera, and Popkins a fortune, and we see the crooked Shaefer who had to pay million$ judgement to GB for fraud bulling his way into the team to hoist JMM on his shoulders for celebration.

Not a fan of Casa, but he deserved better than being sacrificed for the BALCO Juan trilogy with Manny.

I was at this fight. Indeed it was a high level thinking fight with a great ending.

Jose Luis Castillo vs Julio Diaz



Castillo stops Diaz in the 10th to retain his World Lightweight title, good fight, sterling effort from Diaz really took the fight to Castillo at times, outboxed him, fought lefty and had success but swelling to the eye proved too much in the end, Castillo was stronger landing some nice left hooks upstairs, forcing Diaz back at times but Diaz was coming into things before the left eye began to close

Castillo smelled blood and came on strong, decked Diaz in the 10th with a superb left hook, Diaz bravely got up and pushed Castillo back but a right uppercut put him down again heavily and the ref saved Diaz for another day

Bobby Chacon vs Danny Lopez



Chacon stops the brave unbeaten Lopez in the 9th of a non title Featherweight scrap, Lopez was insanely tough and game but he was pretty much second best all night, Chacon time and again nailed him flush with right hands, Lopez just couldn't get out of the way of them or anything else that Chacon threw for that matter

Lopez was always firing back and did land a few clean shots but mostly had to suck up whatever Chacon was dishing out, it wasnt until the 9th that Lopez finally wilted though, seconds into the round Chacon wobbled him with that right and forced Lopez back to the ropes where he teed off on him with superb accuracy before Lopez slumped to the canvas, he somehow dragged himself up but Chacon showed the same accuracy and forced the stoppage with Lopez sagging

Nice great and courageous fight by both men. My beloved Bobby Chacon, one of my favorites, fought brilliantly. I never liked Danny Lopez. But, he could whack. I was just praying for Bobby to not get hit with one of those lethal rights of Little Red more often than the usual.

Bobby Chacon vs Chucho Castillo



Chacon stops Castillo in the 10th and last round of a non title Featherweight bout, good fight, pretty competitive although Chacon was the more workmanlike of the 2, he was busier, just marched forward, jabbing and letting his hands go, right hands, left hook, some nice combination punching, Castillo was always there to fight but he fought in spurts, when he did he looked lively, some big eye catching combo punching himself but as I say too many lulls and he relied on fighting in spells


Chacon decked Castillo in the 10th with a few right hands, Castillo's corner threw in the towel but the ref kicked it out, pretty much straight away Chacon had him down again from the same shots and this time the ref waved it off

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini vs Bobby Chacon



Mancini stops Chacon in the 3rd to retain his World Lightweight title, he was just too big and too fresh for the battleworn Chacon who did go out firing but he was overwhelmed in the end, Mancini outboxed him in the 1st then battered him in the 2nd, mostly up against the ropes, battering the head and body and looking to get the job done early, it didn't take much longer Mancini came out firing in the 3rd, rocked Chacon with a couple of big right hands which backed him onto the ropes where Mancini just pulverised him, Chacon unsurprisingly was trying to duke out but once Mancini nailed him clean with more rights, the ref stepped in, there were boos but Chacon was well on his way out, Mancini wasn't gonna slow down anytime soon

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Ruben Castillo



Chavez KOs Castillo in the 6th to retain his World Super Featherweight title, good scrap, Castillo made it close and landed his fair share but as the rounds wore on Chavez's relentless output ground him down, Castillo's eye was busted up pretty bad and Chavez just never stopped pushing out the punches, especially to the body, by the 6th round Castillo looked nearly done but was still fighting on heart, Chavez trapped him on the ropes and simply punched him to the canvas, Castillo too hurt and tired to even attempt getting up, beating to submission

Laporte/Chavez is a minor classic, one of JCC’s closest fights and a brilliant style clash

Laporte/Castillo is probably better still, loads of guts and drama and little momentum swings

Laporte also gave a decent fight to Pedrosa and as a green challenger did ok against Sal Sanchez

Laporte is one when you look at the sum of his talents may have underachieved, he had power and a good punch, good skills, could be a great counterpuncher (check out the fight with tough Rocky Lockridge to evidence his power and countering skills), he was tough and resilient too (went the distance with Tszuyu at 140 late in his career IIRC)

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Roger Mayweather 1+2



Chavez blows away Mayweather in 2 rounds to retain his World Super Featherweight title, Mayweather down 4 times in the 2nd but Richard Steele only ruled 2 knockdown, not the first time I've seen Steele nearly ruin a fight, Chavez hurt Mayweather in the 2nd with a right then a leaping right dropped Mayweather heavily but somehow ref ruled a slip and literally dragged Mayweather back to his feet but his legs were gone, Chavez dropped him again with another massive right, this time it was scored but when Mayweather went down again it was ruled another slip although in all fairness it was a bit messy, Chavez never messed about and when he decked Mayweather with a left hook it was stopped



Chavez stops Mayweather after 10 rounds of the rematch to become World Super Lightweight champ, Mayweather quitting on his stool after being ground down by the constant never ending pressure of Chavez, good fight and a lot more competitive than the first fight, much better effort this time from Mayweather, he might have even been winning or at least at some point, he was sharper early doors, jabbing moving and cautious not to get clipped again but he was also aggressive in spells, bursting into combinations, Chavez walked forward as ever but was being picked off and only getting through with occasional shots, after 8 rounds it was pretty even stevens but by the 9th Mayweather was looking ragged and it just looked as if Chavez's non stop stalking and punching just finished him, after another torrid 10th Mayweather decided in his corner he was spent

Lupe Pintor-Alberto Davila II

Excellent match. Davila, with his beautiful skills and combination punching got off toe a great start and shook up Pintor a little. Pintor gradually worked his way into the fight and was the stronger of the two and edged it out with a strong rally. It was a close fight and competitive all the way with both guys showing a lot of quality.

Thomas Hearns vs Virgil Hill

Good technical fight.Both guys showed good jabs - Tommy's jab was stronger ,Virgil jab was faster.

Hill showed great chin. He easily withstood
the strongest punches
with Tommy's right hand.Hearns looked solid and feeling comfortable in this
weight category.
