Its a full contact sport where blood is spilt, retinas are detached and noses are broken, not by accident as they are in other contact sports, but from intentional blows.

have to disagree there, homie!! nazarov came up thru the rather lackluster ranks of japanese LWs, career-defining wins were a pair of decisions over weight-drained dingaan thobela, who promptly left 135 & worked his way up to super middle (his best weight)...and the ill-fated, weak-chinned leavander johnson...he was eventually clearly outpointed by rather ordinary jean baptiste mendy, who in turn lost title to stevie johnston!!
while mosley didnt have the greatest opposition at 135 his dominant stoppage wins over john john molina (whose only loss in the previous 8 years was to oscar delahoya) and james leija (who was fresh off a win over future HOFer azumah nelson) clearly show him to be far better LW than the tough but limited nazarov!!

Thobela was good. Good, clean, well balanced boxer. Could be a pleasure to watch on his day. I didn't like Dingaan at 168, he was too chubby!
Definitely an absense of big name foes. Johnston faced the best (Mendy, Scott, Manfredy, Castillo x2, Bazan x2), but he obviously couldn't beat 'em all. Still, I liked Nazarov best, but i'll check out those earlier fights that you refer to
