HW Champion Jim J. Jeffries English Roots

Post by Caractacus »

I was cleaning out the closet in my bathroom the other day and came across half a roll of toilet paper
with some writing on it and I remembered some 6 years ago I was sitting on the throne reading a book
I got thru inter-library loan MY LIFE AND BATTLES by JIm J. Jeffries published in April 1910.
I must have taken some notes at the time .here is what was written on it
JIm J. Jeffries great-great grandfather John J. Jeffries .was born in Wiltshire England in 1656
and came to America in 1681. He settled in the Uplands (Chester) Pennsylvania,he died in 1739 .

Unless you've missed out some greats or wrote the date wrong, that seems unlikely.

Jeffries' father was born 1839, which leaves 183 years for just three more generations.

well maybe the main Jeffries line was concieved when the inseminating dudes were still schtuphing later in life.
( just because there may have been snow on their roofs doesn't mean there wasn't any fire in their furnaces)
and also I remember reading an article on yahoo not too long ago, that read of all the professions in the world
Farmers were the most virile and Horny ( cant remember what the second profession was, maybe lawyers)

Ok, I just dug out my copy of “My Life and Battles”.

It was Robert Jeffries born 1656 in Wiltshire, came to America in 1681. John Jeffries was his father.

It doesn't say it was his great-great grandfather though, which is to be expected really with the time span, there are likely a couple more greats to add to that.

Pretty impressive genealogy research for 1910, though I have no idea if it is accurate.

They probably had a better data base available back in 1910.
since then a lot of places with court records have been destroyed over the years.
like county court houses and churches.
Jeffries had the coin to hire people such as geneology scholars to take their time and do the research.
Particularly if he knew were his family lived over the generations as people tended to stay in place back then.
The Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and Culpeper Virginia( founded 1759) was an ancestral place
before the family moved on to Fairfield County Ohio in 1822
(Fairfield County Ohio was founded in 1800 and included surrounding parts of what are now nearby different counties)
and then out to Los Angles California around 1881.
check this out,it is of Alexis C. Jeffries (1839-1921)
.

https://books.google.com/books?id=FCkPA ... pg=PA73&dq

It says Alexis C. Jeffries grandfather , (of Scotch and Welsh ancestry)
James Jeffries was an extensive planter in Virginia and at one time owned 500 slaves at one point.
He was the one who moved the family to Ohio in 1822 after he lost about everything.
James. H. Jeffries (Alexis C. Jeffries father)was born in Farquhar County Virginia January 1811,
Alexis C. Jeffries was born at Canal Winchester Ohio in February 1839.
Jim J. Jeffries ,The future Heavyweight Champion was born April.15.1875 in Carroll Ohio.

Interesting. Alexis born in 1839 seems very young to be a grandfather of James j, born 1875?

Alexis is the father of James J Jeffries, not grandfather.

James J. Jeffries was about 29 years old when Alexis Jeffries was concieved in 1838
Alexis Jeffries was about 37 years old when Jim J. Jeffries was concieved in 1874.
If I remember correctly Jim J.Jeffries wrote in his 1910 autobiography
that his great-grandfather was William J. Jeffries of the Shendoah Valley.
and his grandfather was John j. Jeffries born in Culpeper Virginia.
who only owned 30 slaves and came to Ohio in a 6 horse Prairie Schooner
bringing only 4 slaves)
(maybe someone who has the book can correct this)
