How good was Mike Williams?

Post by Woldemar »

I know he was considered very promising and he beat Tillis. But i saw only fights when he lose. I saw him against Witherspoon,Douglas,Alex Garcia and Corrie Sanders. His best perfomance was againt Spoon when he lose by split decision.

Who saw fights when he won?And what did you say about him?

He was the first to eat the Douglas straight left that finished Tyson.

A couple of jabs early put him down if memory serves. He didn't look very promising that evening.

The KO was a preview. Tyson/Spinks UC. Good ole CC days.

No doubt. It was a night of heavy's. Berbick; Williams; Ruddock; etc.

I had his fight with Tillis on tape. Tillis had him down and let him off the hook. Classic Tilliis!

He was a tough gate keeper type opponent. If he had been better managed he might have been a contender

Wasn't he the guy who refused to come out of his dressing room to fight Tommy Morrison, so that Tim 'Doughboy' Tomashek ended up taking his place straight from the crowd? And he was also Union Kane in Rocky 5. As a heavyweight, I thought he was a decent actor.

No. He never showed up, and they had Tomashek ready as a backup.

He did look pretty good against Tillis, and took Timmy Witherspoon to an MD or SD. He had the misfortune of getting Douglas on Tokyo form. He was better than this record suggests.

He was considered a prospect at the start of his career but while he looked great he just wasn't tough enough, mentally or physically, to be a legitimate contender.

Here's the AP write up on the circumstances around Tomashek replacing Williams.

Yes his big win is Tillis and, having watched the fight, I can confirm that was more a case of Tillis being sadly afflicted by James Quick Tillis Syndrome than Williams being championship calibre. He was a good fighter for a few years, but nothing special. Still, beating Tillis and losing to on-form versions of Spoon and Douglas in his prime is no disgrace.

PS. I saw him in his final fight versus the enigmatic Lawrence Clay-Bey in 2000, and he looked no different physically than he had 12 years earlier against Douglas!

Yeah Douglas was on a major upturn in form when he beat Williams, different animal to the one that lost to Tucker.

I like the "Doughboy pulled from the crowd, beer in hand" version of the story and I'll continue to spread it.

He was there as a backup and Williams was a no-show 40 minutes before the fight.

By his own admission he'd had at least a couple of beers watching undercard fights.

Williams-Douglas was the classic fight that shows that you should judge a book by it's cover. Douglas as usual looked out of shape. However, he knew what he was doing and completely out classed Williams.

I think Tillis was diagnosed with some sort of medical condition later on in his career that explained why he was on empty after 8 rounds. If not for this, i think he could have joined the 1980s heavy weight champs as a title holder also

i think the problem with Tillis and Tommy Morison was that they developed bad diet habits early on.
Tommy Morrison's idea of a good breakfast growing up was Twinkies,Doritos and 7-Up.
James Quick Tillis liked to drink a lot of milk but may have actually been lactose intolerent (but i'm not a doctor).
