Fighters are surprisingly clueless and dumb about the sport. If you find a fighter who is even average as a pundit, that makes him excellent compared to other fighters. I dunno, are boxers dumb?

I remember being in America, and we had David Tua vs Michael Moorer on. When Tua knocked him out in about 30 seconds.

They then had a lot of time to kill, so were basically trying to over-analyse the very little action that there was. Whoever it was doing ringside interviews found George Foreman in the crowd, and asked if Big George thought the win was comprehensive enough. And George goes, completely deadpan; "I'd say it was a decisive win for David Tua. He beat him in 30 seconds. You can't more decisive than that."

I was half expecting them to analyse what Tua did wrong to not win in 20 seconds.

Talking about the BBC, who was that absolute melon they used to get to do ring side interviews? Was it Garry Richardson?

I remember him going up to Howard Eastman once after Eastman had fought somebody who'd come in as a late replacement, and basically wouldn't let it go that the guy hadn't put in a bad performance.

Interviewer; "So, Howard. Your opponent wasn't very good tonight ,was he?"
Howard; "I would never say that about an opponent. I would never show them that disrespect."
Interviewer; "No I understand that, but he wasn't very good, was he?"
Howard; "To be fair, he only knew he was coming in at 48 hours notice, so I think he gave a good account of himself."
Interviewer; "Yeah, I appreciate the circumstances. But would it be fair to say that wasn't the sort of performance you'd expect in an opponent?"
Howard; "Well, like I said, he'd had very little warning or preparation for the fight and it took me into the middle-rounds. So I think it was fair play."
Interviewer; "Yeah but come on. He wasn't at his best, was he?"

There were several interviews like that. When he seemed to want to get a controversial sound byte rather than any sensible critique.

I just watched this fight after a Canelo dive deep. Think it was vs Carlos Baldomir or Matthew Hatton, one of those middling fights from before his peak. It was quite strange and funny.

Think RJJ also said Canelo’s different from all other Mexicans, because he doesn’t have “mediocre speed and power.”
