According to Dillian Whyte, Wilder was roughing up Wlad, before getting knocked out cold. Quite the learning experience!
It seems Wlad's camp was quite the gauntlet for up coming heavies.

I've heard for years that Wlad KO'd Wilder with a left hook, pretty sure Sugar Hill or another Kronk guy also gave a detailed account once saying Wilder was going all out but then got KTFO--it didn't really sound like something made to puff up Wlad either. Hasn't done Wilder much harm I don't think. His learning obviously came from sparring and not his years of bum fights that he had. Sparring with better (they were at the time at least) and more experienced guys is a great way to learn

They had him sparring with Haye, Wlad, etc all while fighting Jess Oltmans. That's why he was still able to improve. Being in those camps he also got work with other guys like Wach, Dimitrenko, Scott, Gassiev etc...guys who were way better than his opponents.

I believe all of Whyte's account except that he (Whyte) was sent home for giving Wlad a real fight and roughing him up. That bullshit is what every fighter's firsthand account of their own sparring is: I was beating him and he didn't like that so they got rid of me.

He probably didn't present Wlad with anything interesting to deal with. It's not like he's an inventive boxer or a tough challenge to figure out. He's basically a big body who can punch and take a punch, which is perfect for getting sparring rounds in--unless he takes the attitude "he's not going to knock me out" so he doesn't even try anything. That's what really happened.

I roll my eyes when I hear "so and so got knocked out or beat up in sparring" it's just stupid, and pointless.

It almost never winds up mattering in the ring. I can't tell you how many times I've heard rumors of somebody kicking somebody's ass in the gym, and then they fight, and they lose their ass.

If a Basketball player can't sink a shot at Basketball practice. He didn't lose a game. If a Boxer gets the ass end of a sparring session. He didn't lose a fight.

These stories are irrelevant.

Boxers are conditioned to think they're winning. Why would sparring be any different than the real fights? Broner thought he beat Manny, Manny thought he beat Floyd, etc...

I take sparring stories with a grain of salt. How many times was Vitali Klitschko dropped in the ring? NONE but many may not be aware that veteran journeyman slugger Raphael Butler laid him out sparring. Rumour has it Tye Fields was kicking Arreola’s ass in sparring & then got sent home. I don’t know if that is true or not but i’m pretty sure under the lights Arreola would have given Fields the Monte Barrett treatment... Sparring means nothing in my opinion other then getting some good experience & possible preparation for an upcoming fight...
