As of January 2020 who do you rate as the current #1 British Trainer?

Post by TopGun »

Have left out a few names like Peter Fury but felt that his stable of late meant he didnt make this list.

I'm going for Dom Ingle. Most consistent for me.

Agree. Probably Ingle with Shane McGuigan not too far behind. Would probably benefit McGuigan to break away from Cyclone and train fighters independently...

The Ingle gym is by far the most impressive in producing fighters from scratch, and then we see big changes with the likes of Liam W. A lot of the time people just default 'best trainer' to who the bandwagon at the moment is. With that though , when a bunch of guys flock to a certain trainer, how much success is there really based on that trainer?

I remember lots of fighters going to Virgil Hunter based on his success with Ward, but then pretty much hardly any of them did all too well or showed notable and sustained improvement. Is a guy like Shane McGuigan really having his fighters perform above and beyond what we'd see other trainers do?

Trainers IMO get too much credit and also too much blame. Unless they've taken a guy from scratch, usually you are talking about them working with fighters who have been boxing for years and already have most things settled in regardless of what the trainer is doing.

You could take a random nan and have her train Josh Taylor, and he'd still be able to box at a high level. Lol then watch her get called a top trainer and suddenly have a big stable :yay:

I went for McCracken, Gary Lockett should have a mention, other than that Ingle, Tesco and Tibbs are the top boys.

They can make a difference, but I think overall too much credit and blame is given to them.

Another note, people already acting like Ben Davies is some elite level trainer

I like Shane McGuigan, it's a shame to see his dads affairs affect his own career, I like his corner work

Any of the trainers mentioned can take a world level fighter to the ring and get him in great shape. What makes the difference is their ability to read a fight and get the correct information across in the ring. To get the most out of a fighter you have to have a good understanding of their personality, I think that's vital

Lots of different things, nurturing raw talent, polishing world class talent, knowing when to push, when to hold back, psychological stuff, making weight, developing a plan and training for it, motivating and giving encouragement, giving a fighter confidence, giving an over confident fighter fear, being his mum, his confidente, his social worker

Not pro. I had a brief AM career and was kind of a sparring partner for a while lol. I trained at the Moston and Collyhurst gym under Brian Hughes and at Champs Camp in Manchester. I did some work with Adam Booth about a decade ago and a few other gyms. Booth really breaks down your stance and style and gives you real info to actually use going forward, he was great.

Exactly. A good trainer is priceless. Suggesting otherwise is nonsensical

Trainer's success is just as much synergy with the fighter as it is training technique. If you can't get the fighter to buy in you both fail. There has got to be a connection.
