Post by chadda »

Hi My name is Chad Ritchie i am the grandson of Dave Sands and i am trying to track down or can someone tell me if my grandfather was awarded a belt when he stopped Dick Turpin for the British Empire Middleweight Championship??? I am trying to also collect memrobilia for my collection if anyone can help about my grandfather. I am following in my grandfathers footsteps of becoming a professional boxer.

You may not have seen his record then? Born 4/2/1926, Dave Sands had a 97-10-1 record, and did indeed beat Turpin to win the British Empire (now known as the Commonwealth) title. He also defended it a couple of years later. He also (quite incredibly) held three Australian titles at different weights simultaneously! (He won the heavyweight title @ 154lb. Obviiously he must have been the dominant force in Oz boxing at the time, with little competition.

Dave Sand´s second fight against Carl Bobo Olson was televised, but I have only seen a 4 rounds highlight of the fight.

Having beaten Bobo Olson twice and Dick Turpin(aswell as many lesser fighters) you would have to say he was very unlucky not to get a shot at the world title middleweight title in the early 1950's . Maybe he would have if it wasn't for the loss to Pompey .
