Teddy Atlas versus Hector Camacho

Post by goose 5 »

Atlas recounts their bare knuckle fight in an interview on youtube. It's very interesting; he got the better of Camacho.

Lol I wouldn't take his word as the truth

Have you read his autobio? It's just like endless streams of him saying he single handedly wiped out huge packs of guys in the street. He basically claims to have been Shannon Briggs protector too. Oh ya, he admits to trying to murder Donnie Lalonde. Guy is a self-absorbed delusional nut who is spending his senior years shouting at people at IHOP

I’m throwing in the bullshit flag. I grew up in the Bronx, near Camacho’s stomping grounds, and though he was known as a mover in the ring, the guy had a reputation as a vicious street fighter who beat the shit out of many far bigger, legit tough guys.
I remember being at a friends house to watch the Chavez-Rosario fight and friend of my friend - around 6’4, maybe 230, built like a shit brick house- entered the place with his face covered with black and blue knots.
He explained - in a weirdly cheerful manner- that the night before he got into an altercation with Camacho at a club because he started hitting on his girl right to his face.
He said after the two squared up, all he remembered was a blur of fists coming at him, then looking up dazed from the floor while Camacho was being dragged away by a few bouncers as he kept hollering “Macho time! Macho time!”
And Ive heard similar stories from other people, though not first hand accounts.

I'm sure Teddy would claim that he took out Macho and your buddy and the bouncers at the same time while Shannon Briggs and Moorer were cowering in fear behind their brave protector. He lined them up and ko'd them a single Teddy super punch!

I remember back in the 1980's the word in New York gyms was that Atlas is crazy and a lot of fighters were said to be afraid of him for that reason. After the Camacho altercation, the story was that Atlas threatened to bite Camacho's face when he had him in a type of lock and Camacho wouldn't have been able to stop him. Now, Atlas said nothing like that in the interview, but that was the story that was circulating back then.

Gil Clancy, who wasn't training anymore at the time, had a rep for squaring off with any fighter during his day. The word in the gyms was that Clancy was super tough but I never heard him described as crazy.

Teddy, the king of the sucker punch, has a wonderful imagination. The guy didnt amount to shit as an amateur but he in his mind he beat the shit out of all of these professional boxers because hes really such a tough guy. Hes a fornicating loser lunatic.

Had Atlas whipped Camacho while sparring, we should believe it. All "tales from the gym" should be believed.

Don't think Teddy beat Hector, but he did spend some time at Rikers, so he's not a punk.

 While his book was an entertaining read and his analogies as an announcer are also entertaining the man is simply full of sh!t. He was the greatest street fighter of all time according to himself. He also would have been the greatest boxer of all time, I forget what the supposed injury was that kept him from accomplishing that.

I worded it wrong, I probably should have said Teddy wasn't weak.

Anyone heard of the ‘Adirondacks Golden Gloves’ tournament? Teddy refers to it simply as “The Gloves”
