Favourite Commentary Quotes...?

Post by Stuarty »

Following on from the 'Ridiculous Commentary' thread recently... What's you're favourite pieces of commentary?

Ours over here tend to be pretty grim. The Yanks are a lot better. The 'i'm going back to England Maaa' when Froch beat Taylor is a good one.

The Richard Grant v James Butler fight in the aftermath of Butler assaulting Grant the commentator said 'The Harlem Hammer should be in the slammer tonight'

Jim McNeilly has an inexhaustible supply !

Commenting on Frenchman Hacine Cherifi's bravery against Howard Eastman he put a twist on a more common expression and came up with "I take my beret off to him ! ".

The whole of Ian Darke's commentary on Haskins v Broadhurst was brilliant.
One line included something like, "The British boxing awards are coming up this weekend. One of the categories is fight of the year. This one will not be nominated."

Some favorites off the top of my head.

Gatti vs Robinson 1

"In the past this is when Gatti has been dangerous"

"AND THERE IT WAS! Can you believe this guy? Can you believe Gatti?"

At this time he was in a Fight of the Year type war every time he got in the ring.

I also loved Larry's smartass comments like "The best thing about that round was their boxing trunks" after a particularly boring round, but...they had colorful trunks

This line from Emanuel Steward in Gatti vs Ward 1 was always special too.

"You know, you dream of fights like this, but very seldom do they live up to expectation. This is even more than you can dream of"

I searched Barry Tomkins - Berbick is down and WE have a new era in boxing!
Yes, good one. And the - looks like he’s stumbling around in a play pen - as Berbick tried to regain his feet.

Martinez was then regarded as a safe enough opponent for a defence! He damn ruined that!
It took him 5 years to get back in world class company after Stone and Williams
