Patrick Lumumba

Post by clubberlang »

Just listening to Glenn Mccory talk about Patrick Lumumba, he said that he was the world amateur champion, boxrec says he had a record of 388-6 but I can't find anything about him being a world amateur champ, Glen also said he ended up in jail for murdering his family, has anyone got any details about this?

388-6??? Wtf?

Well, he drowned and had about 49 known fights that I could find. He did spend time in jail for arson. Not much more then this link to a swedish boxing site about him.

Lumumba had some 50 fights in Sweden after a succesful career in Kenya but hardly +300 fights...he was only 20-21 when he came to Sweden.
He wasn´t Swedish citizen so couldn´t box in World Championships but he did defeat Polands Pawel Skrzecz, 1980 Olympic Silver medalist.

Didn't know he had passed. What is the story there?

Wasn't he British?

He was British-managed for a while and based in London but his manager, Tony Lavelle, was killed in a horror motorway smash and Lumumba made his way to the States.

I just started listening to this, it’s one of the very early Boxing Life Stories episodes. I like Glenn but a few things don’t add up what he claims about Lumumba. He also said he beat Broad (he didn’t) and he stood Mike Tyson on his head in sparring. That I find hard to believe. Also described Lumumba as being like Lomachenko. I get people get rose tinted glasses sometimes but the guy had a 8-2 record when Glenn fought him and retired with a 9-4 record. So being a world amateur champion with a 388-6 record is highly unlikely.

I note on the footage of him fighting Glenn his record was displayed as 13-2 (5 KOS) but boxrec lists him as 8-2 before the fight so even his limited pro record appears wrong.

Alas, it is absolutely impossible to verify the full amateur record of any boxer.
On the other hand, it is relatively easy to check, whether a boxer was the world amateur champion (including youth & junior).
Patrick Lumumba https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/18396 was not a world amateur champion.

By all accounts Lumumba was unlucky not to get the verdict over heavyweight James Broad. He definately sparred Tyson, as did McCrory, and in his last two fights before Glenn had beaten former champ Alfonso Ratliff and future champ Jeff Lampkin. Lampkin would travel to England to stop McCrory in 3 with a vicious body shot.

It seems Lumumba was a talented fighter but McCrory wasn´t going to be beaten in front of his home crowd. I have read that Lumumba became an enforcer in Sweden, torched a house killing two. Was deported back to Kenya where he died of water poisoning. No idea if these claims are true.

His performance against McCrory left a lot to be desired. He fought like what he had become: a sparring partner.
