Willie Pep Record Mistake?

Post by mjaco »

I was doing some research for an article and believe I found a mistake in the record posted for Willie Pep. Boxrec has him at 229 wins where other sources have him at 230 wins. The discrepancy seems to be a fight he had on May 26, 1942 against Joey Iannotti. While the bout is listed here https://boxrec.com/en/event/30203/168131 and appears on Iannotti's record on Boxrec, it seems to be missing from Pep's record.

That's odd. The link I posted seems to have changed to a different Joey Iannotti fight. But the link John posted above has the correct bout record. I don't know what the process is to make changes to the database but just wanted to alert whoever takes care of that there was an error.

The issue is just what I stated in my original post. Boxrec lists Willie Pep as having 229 wins because the Joey Iannotti fight is missing from his record. It should be added giving him 230 wins.

The bout is in our system, but it is not showing in Pep's record for some reason.

The Iannotti-fight in question does count in Pep's record too...

The fight before (vs. Aaron Seltzer), Willie is listed as 40-0
The fight after (1st encounter vs. Joey Archibald, Willie is listed 42-0.

So Iannotti-fight does get accounted for, it just doesn't show up.

This bug btw apparently occurs on every record with more than 200 fights. The last bout of 2nd page (ie. the 200th counted from the most previous gets missed from showing). The bug is being checked now.

Pep contended that he won 229 bouts, but acknowledged that he was credited with 230. I never heard or read anything from him to explain the discrepancy.

Anyway - Iannotti-fight is included in 229 wins. It is in a system, it is in Pep's record.

Due some bug, it just isn't visible without pulling few tricks. And this problem indeed happens with EVERY fighter with their 200th listed fight (as well as with number 300 and potentially also with number 400, which might become possible on amateur side).

It will surely be solved soon though.

Glad to hear it's going to be fixed. I'm doing research on various fighters for an article and just wanted to be as precise as possible on records so I was checking several sources when I noticed the discrepancy. I thought it was kind of important because I'd always heard of Pep's 62 fight win streak and the missing Iannotti fight actually turned it into a 61 fight win streak when I started counting them up on Pep's Boxrec entry.

I am sure it will be repaired, but right now I can only give you a trick how to see these missing fights...

The very last fight on the 2nd page (and also on the 3rd page is total number reaches 300 as it does for f ex Peter Buckley) is the one which doesn't show even while it exists.

To see that fight - when you go on 3rd page of result sheet, the address of the page will be :

https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/43?offset=200

Now if you manually change that address to :

https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/43?offset=199

The missing fight comes to a light at the top.

But I can not access the code so I can neither find out why this happens nor make any repair work.

BUg has been eliminated. Records work again properly for people with 200 or more fights (including Willie the Wisp)
