British Champion ?

You rather be Brit champ or IBF champ?bennie wrote: ↑04 Feb 2020, 03:27I don't think it's the best title but it's the best belt and wonderfully transparent amid the muddle of world titles out there.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑04 Feb 2020, 00:27

Re: British Champion ?
But then there is a big difference between the IBO, WBF or the WBU and the 4 bigger ones.bennie wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 23:33 I honestly feel that an ex-boxer spotted at a show and announced "former British champion..." is better than an ex-boxer announced "former world champion...". If Schwer had won the WBC it would be far different.
Re: British Champion ?
Bet Schwer would rather have a few million fight purse than ever winning a title.

Well looking at his facebook I would say IBObennie wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 23:33 I honestly feel that an ex-boxer spotted at a show and announced "former British champion..." is better than an ex-boxer announced "former world champion...". Re: British Champion ?
Even if someone like Stalker were British champion and earning £30k a fight (doubtful to be honest unless you're an Anthony Joshua type with all the hype in the world); you have to pay your trainer, cutsman, sparring partners, medical expenses, license costs, scans etc. before you see a penny. Not unheard of for a £30k purse to actually mean the fighter gets £10k. Even if an active fighter fights 4/5 times a year; £40-50k a year is not a huge amount of money given the sacrifices needed from a 'normal' life to be successful in boxing, and that's before you factor in that every fight could be your last.
This is the big reason why the hypocrisy of Eddie Hearn winds me up when he puts two bloody YouTube people on a show to earn a few more million each. Complete sh!thouse that fella. Disrespecting the sport and everyone who works their stones off to make a career at even local area level.

£30-40k for a british title fight.
You are having a laugh !
A British Champ would struggle to get 5 grand a fight.
Six round journeymen DO NOT get £2000 per fight.
They are lucky to see 600 quid. Then they are told to go easy on the guy who sells all the tickets.
If the journeyman wins he has to give his purse to the prospect he just beat. FACT

Re: British Champion ?
I can't be certain but I'd have to dispute your figures ,nobleart.
I reckon a purse of £30,000 -£40,000 for a British title defence is not unusual. I realise money has to come off that. 25% to the manager and 10% to the trainer is the max. Some managers and trainers ( not all) also charge for gym use and I'm not sure who pays for the sparring. Some managers also pay for the medicals.
You're saying 6 round fighters don't walk off with £2,000? I have to concede that figure is at the higher end but £1,500 is pretty normal.

It depends on who it is. But usually between 15-30k average.

Well I work closely with journeymen at the gym 3 nights a week and 500 quid is the average.
My partner in the gym is an ex british champ and no way did he get 40 grand for defending the Lonsdale Belt.

Re: British Champion ?
Is £500 after deductions? I got £1,100 for 6x3s 25 years ago, so after deductions around £600, I’m with you on the 40 grand thing, no way are they earning that for the Britishnobleart1978 wrote: ↑05 Feb 2020, 11:57 Well I work closely with journeymen at the gym 3 nights a week and 500 quid is the average.

Re: British Champion ?
Nope unless you are a draw/name like Eubank Jr, BJS, Fury when they were British title level.

Re: British Champion ?
Ya people often overlook all the deductions boxers face, after all those and tax purses are hugely widdled down. Obviously fighters have different arrangments, but I knew a guy who worked with a lower weight world champ who made a 100k purse to defend in japan, and the guy didn't even take home 40k. I also once saw a commission sheet from the usa of what the boxers were getting after deductions (they had it arranged so they just got those automatically taken off) and it was miniscule.MarkMcBurney wrote: ↑05 Feb 2020, 05:39 Even if someone like Stalker were British champion and earning £30k a fight (doubtful to be honest unless you're an Anthony Joshua type with all the hype in the world); you have to pay your trainer, cutsman, sparring partners, medical expenses, license costs, scans etc. before you see a penny. Only a tiny tiny number of boxers make enough to live comfortably once they are done in the sport. We can hear a guy is making a million purse, but the reality is to actually be a millionaire he is gonna need several of those
Re: British Champion ?
I hear Matchroom boxing is having a show in Bournemouth next month or two. It will be good to see Live boxing at the BIC. I have got Family in Dorset so will be a decent night out. Been to the O2 in Boscombe a few times, good venue for boxing, Lee Cutler looked good but hasn't fought a fighter with a winning record so you don't know where he will go till he does. Give it 5 years and should be a few decent fighters.

Hardly any of that is true, unless you’ve got a terrible manager. No journeyman would give his purse back!nobleart1978 wrote: ↑05 Feb 2020, 07:17 £30-40k for a british title fight.

I've literally never heard of a journeyman being made to give his purse back! Craig Denton from Hartlepool was 9-0 as a pro when he jacked in. He said he was only clearing about £300 a fight after all of his deductions so it wasn't worth his while.

Satchell probably retired due to small money, lack of support etc.

Re: British Champion ?
My mate was 7-0 and said pretty much the same thing. His promoter tried to use him a couple of times for big shows with only a couple days notice and fighting above his natural weight etc... He ended up sick of it and says to this day he wishes he stayed amateur....johnty1888 wrote: ↑06 Feb 2020, 16:08 Craig Denton from Hartlepool was 9-0 as a pro when he jacked in. Satchy was a strange one. One minute he was flying, with Brit and Euro titles and good FW coverage, then suddenly he starts going back to journeymen, then he retires very young.Glass Joe wrote: ↑06 Feb 2020, 16:28 https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/548956

Re: British Champion ?
Yeah, strange last two fights were against fighters with losing records on an FW show. maybe the money to defend his titles was only 4 figures so guessing he got fed up, he never gave a reason why he retired in the news, just that he was going to train his son.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑06 Feb 2020, 16:43Satchy was a strange one. Re: British Champion ?
The gross purse for any fight can vary, but there are figures for 4,6 & 8 rounders that can be broadly standard. There are several considerations that will be taken into account that might have an impact and, of course, negotiating.
Re: British Champion ?
its difficult to be very accurate with purses for any fight, British title defence or not. Hardly anybody tells the truth for fairly obvious reasons. The only time there's facts is when a TV company is involved because they have accountants etc who have to account for expenditure.
