Sergey Kovalev moving up to cruiserweight

Post by Enlightened-One »

Yesterday, it was announced that Krusher is moving up to cruiserweight.

Hi trainer, Buddy McGirt said the following:

“He’s going up to cruiserweight,” McGirt said to Boxing Junkie. “We’ll start training in about a month. As long as we go to 185 [pounds], we’re good. No more than 185,” McGirt said. “He can come in at 180 and beat those guys. He’ll be light, and that’s OK. I think he’ll be better at that weight,”

Thoughts?

It seems weird for a 175lb-er to want to compete in the region of 180lbs to 185lbs against 220lbs+ guys that will dehydrate to 200lbs in order to achieve the “official” cruiserweight limit.

Krusher can be successful at the higher weight class, as long as he’s protected and takes the easiest route to earn a shot at the weakest champion (perhaps Arsen Goulamirian?).

There’s a civil and a separate criminal case against Sergey Kovalev, meaning that he has two legal proceedings to deal with.

Krusher only made one initial payment for $250K of the agreed $650K settlement figure to resolve the civil lawsuit, despite apparently earning $10m for the Canelo bout. He breached a written contract and is now being sued for much more… and fraud is now one of the claims being made against the Russian (and to be fair, they seem perfectly valid).

See the following court documents for more:
https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-conte ... Boxing.pdf

In terms of the criminal jury trial, I believe that has recently been pushed back twice (November 26th 2019 and January 6th 2020). I am not sure when (or if) this will actually be held.

I suspect the settlement agreement for the civil case (even though Krusher failed to fulfil it) may have resulted in the delay of the criminal jury trial (since the terms of the settlement agreement included a stipulation whereby the plaintiff was expected to waive her right to restitution in the criminal case).

He was a beast in his day, but he’s been on the slide for a while now, Didn’t he make over $10m against Canelo? You’d think financially he’s sound and he’s never making that kind of dough at CW.

How he looked against Canelo, he needs to move to a nursing home, not cruiserweight.

There're some interesting matchups for him there. But probably he won't be much successful and the main factor here is his age. He should have a retirement fight at the LHWs.

Yes, you'd think someone close to him could break this unfortunate news.

For sure he might still feel like the old krusher for 5/6 minutes or so in sparring but a move up to Cruiserweight will only result in a severe case of reality testing.

Careful matchmaking too also has its limits.

Buddy McGirt needs retiring as well if he thinks a shop worn Kovalev can compete at Cruiser weighing around 180...

Buddy is just earning his paycheck. Why should he worry about that POS.

Well, true, but it’s a nonsense thing for a respected trainer to come out with. Especially considering his charge lost to a middleweight not too long ago...

I’m sure I know that you are saying he will be a KO victim and I agree. Something about Kovalev getting koed, he crumbles so badly, looks like his soul is leaving his body.

Who knows what will happen?

You can win a boxing world title by opening a packet of All Bran these days, so if Kovalev can bag himself a trinket, he could offer Alvarez the chance to challenge for a 'world' honour at CW in a rematch, then he can fall over to order again and Canelo can then then tick off the 200lb weight class as part of his weight hopping endeavours.

We'll see him lose by KO again of course, but it's not some obviously sad thing, he was still beating some decent LHWs, I don't doubt he could have a meaningful cruiser fight as long as he doesn't wait around too much to get started. I'm expecting that he is on the last year or two of his career though

We see all the time guys fighting far further past their primes than this
