Sammy McCarthy dead

Post by john2345 »

Can’t see any mention on Forum (here or History) but maybe I missed it.

Sammy McCarthy former British Featherweight Champion from 1950s era died earlier this week aged 88. Good fighter, great crowd favourite. He managed Terry Spinks when TS first turned pro.

Must be showing my age when I say I remember Sammy’s losing fight with Billy Spider Kelly like it was yesterday!

there’s a chapter devoted to Sammy in Alex Daley’s book ‘Fighting Men of London’ In which Sammy talks openly about his time as an armed robber. At the end he says he liked the excitement it offered, though he regrets the huge impact it had on his family (divorce etc). Good book, worth a read.

Read the book, I gave a small extract from a very long chapter. Easy to take it out of context.

My cousin who was the same age as me committed an armed robbery and discharged a shotgun during it. Him and this other idiot rented a van. They robbed the post office and left the van sitting.... with his papers and licence still in the fuckin van! No joke! He got 8 years and his wee wank pal got away with it. He turned up dead in open prison a couple of years back. They're still doing the inquest just now along with another couple bodies that turned up....

Sammy turned to armed robbery because, as with Jimmy Thunder and a million other fighters, he was completely lost after his boxing career ended and just didn't care. Believe me, the man was a diamond and a vastly underrated fighter. He grew up with Terry Lawless and inspired Terry to train and manage fighters and the net result was a string of world champions.

I knew a guy when we were kids, 15 at the time, a few of them broke into a warehouse but they don't have a car to get away.

Sammy mc Carthy was a nice old guy, and very polite and mannerly. He's the last person in the world you'd have thought was an armed robber. He never hid the fact and would laugh about it. I always thought he was a bit ashamed about the whole thing.
He always said the hardest punch he ever received was a body shot from Dave Charnley.

I met Sammy in his later years and you could not meet a nicer person. He made everyone he met feel like hed had known them years and he was an old friend.Smiling Sammy is a nickname very well earnt.
When I heard about his past as an armed robber it was surreal as after meeting him if id been given a 100 guess's at what hed been up too 30 to 40 years ago I still wouldn't have got it right.
I had dinner with him and a few of his friends (two of which were older than him) and it was just a pleasure to sit and listen to them chat and like I say you couldn't find someone further removed from what he had been 40 years before

I’m guessing Hand is your cousin? Any cause of death yet?

Kevin Sloan his name is. I'm sure both stories are still online. They had an inquest and cause of death was cardiac arrest but i'm not sure of the circumstances surrounding it. He was right in to the roids at the time so it might have been something to do with that. He was a twat anyway...
