Ricardo Lopez

Post by Grant »

Hi all, when everyone puts their best ever list together should this guy be in it?
OK so he is minimum weight but I did hear people talking about him years ago and decided to look up his record. It stacks up well.
Who saw him and what are your thoughts?

To me he looks great to the eye but I hardly recognize anyone on his resume

Could do it all but never had the best competition. His best opponents gave him hell. I loved watching him back in the day tho.

he was a really good all round fighter but it’s not as though in terms of skill and talent, he’s in another galaxy to a fighter like say Gilberto Roman, except Roman actually fought quite a few good fighters. So I can see why he gets called over-rated, for me the eye test thing isn’t so shattering and awesome that you just want to forget his record.

I grew up catching his fights on sky/Eurosport before the days of internet and Boxrec. He looked spectacular to young me, especially since I was a straw weight myself at the time. Before I got into Duran, it was Lopez I wanted to box like.

Excellent fighter, overrated too. I think a lot of it is media and fans proving they pay attention to the smallest fighters. I've seen people call him the greatest Mexican ever when he really has no business in the top 10.

I think that's fair though I do place him in the top 10. As far as pure skill, technique and his overall qualities as a fighter he was simply majestic. A special fighter. Great consistency and longevity and was great as an old man (especially at that weight class) but there is not a great deal of quality on his resume. Sanchez, Sorjaturong, Guardia, Grigsby, Alvarez, Lin, Petelo, Ohasi etc; is a good solid bunch collectively but nothing jumps out. His unbeaten record and the number of title defenses added to his talents equate to being a great fighter but yes, there is a lot of that overrating him to sound informed or from folks who see an "0" as a mark of greatness just as I think there's a lot of underrating him from hipsters rebelling against such folks.

I think that Ricardo "Finito" Lopez is a top 10 all-time of Mexico, and of course, #1 all-time strawweight.

Everybody is entitled to his own opinion, but to me, some of the guys listed above were not in Finito's class.

The guy alone was an inspiration for "Hajime no Ippo"'s Ricardo Martinez, that alone speaks for his cause.
