Nondescript wrote: 24 Nov 2019, 05:49 I don't think Wilder is as bad a boxer as he's made out to be. Sure, he gets outboxed a lot of the time, but it's never to the degree whereby he's getting hit from pillar to post.

He tends to get outboxed but it's never by huge margins within each round.

Even when you look at the Fury fight, he was getting outboxed, but he never really absorbed much damage.
Again though, that’s cos of his right hand equaliser. Even if someone can easily outbox him, they have to remain extremely cautious. If he didn’t have that, he wouldn’t even be in the top 200.
I agree regarding his power making people cautious but I don't agree regarding the top 200.

Wilders not the best boxer, but cmon there's some serious crap within the top 200 at heavyweight lol.

You have to remember that Wilder won a bronze at the Olympics.

Wilders boxing has improved a lot , of course Ruiz was well ahead i had him 5 rnds ahead ,, But he was getting out scored , not beat up ,, his defence has improved a lot ,, but most of all he's now picking his shots and setting them up , he showedd a remarkable amount of pateince , the winging and swinging widly was ,nt hapening and he shown confidence and patience ,, plus his conditioning was looking better than in the past .

Well I saw that one coming, again, for all this talk of Ortiz' amazing technical skill...his footwork is abysmal, he walked himself onto a right hand AGAIN, hopefully that's the last we see of the geriatric Cuban, decent hands, awful footwork

I think he could beat any other HW out there except Fury.

You have to be born with that kind of power, in Feb it will really come down to ...

- Can Fury stay switched on for 36mins
- Can Wilder land that right flush

If Ortiz wasn't a drug injecting piece of sh1t then you'd maybe feel sorry for him, he was winning everything right up until he got poleaxed from that monster right hand, Wilder was awful right up until that punch landed, he fought scared and looked petrified to throw the big right, Ortiz constantly backed him up pressured him and troubled him with the southpaw left hand, especially to the body, he worked that shot well

Ortiz looked like he was starting to take Wilder apart in that 7th before getting starched, Wilder again showing that phenomenal power but for 2 of the top HWs on the planet, the punch output was abysmal especially from Wilder, still what a KO

This. Wilder fought fvcking dreadfully, but that right hand is insane. The finisher looked to land on the cheekbone & Ortiz was still out before he hit the floor!

I can't see how the Septic doesn't break his hands, hitting like that & hardly ever landing flush on the chin—even the two Fury knockdowns were along the side of the head & on the long side of the jaw IIRC.

Wilder did well to block a lot punches with his gloves. Did anyone else notice? Not all of what Ortiz landed was clean..

He was getting his lead foot on Wilder's inside at will in the early rounds, it was only the threat of walking onto Wilder's lead right that stopped him applying more pressure. So he tried backing Wilder up to the ropes to shorten that right hand, taking some of its sting away, while bringing himself into his best range. This is a main component of trying to beat Wilder.

For my money, Wilder overrated the risk a bit in open play when distance frequently favoured him, electing to paw with his jab when stood at optimal range to nail it and double up. Conserving energy sometimes, sure, but the way he was letting his elbow swing out — as if undecided between jab and hook — made me wonder if he had a minor injury. His left to the body, landed a couple of times, was really nice; his only eyecatching thing until the finish, really.

But then Ortiz made the same mistake again: he couldn't stop himself from chasing a buzzed Wilder towards the centre. ‘Ortiz could have this’, I was thinking as Wilder found himself in the corner momentarily, ‘but only if he's really careful not to rush it and lets it unfold slowly’. He didn't need to be chasing the KO when he was that far ahead!

Because Wilder relies on athleticism, I am beginning to wonder if he'll decline faster than his peers. He seemed particularly flat this time, even though he was obviously not wasting energy on purpose. Fury was able to get up after a left hook from a tired, off-balance Wilder, a shot I think that Ruiz could also get up from. I'd fancy Ruiz to beat Wilder right now. Unless he underrated Wilder's power in comparison to AJ's, which is possible.

Beautiful finisher, in summary, but the worst I've seen Wilder in a long time, neglecting fundamentals that would've lost him the fight if Ortiz hadn't started feeling himself as a result.

Despite losing every round to that moment, Wilder fixes it with his bomb. Either he has ultimate his best shot or he is getting just more lucky; can it works against Fury in their rematch, though?

True and untrue really. So footballers are incredible at taking free kicks for example but never play for top clubs if that’s all they can do. Wilder seems like he can only land a right hand, that to be fair is fvcking incredible. But he makes Luiz Ortiz look like floyd Mayweather skills wise

Wilder has plenty boxing skills. So he's not at the pugilistic level of Ortiz, but people should remember Ortiz has won every fight vs heavyweights not named Wilder. He's miles better than AJ imo.

Of course you meant Ortiz. I agree with everything you say here. DW doesn't get any credit from his detracters except the power

The whole suggestion that Wilder showed really improved boxing in this fight was obviously nonsense. He was losing pretty much every round to a guy he already knocked out, totally bizarre to me how many people acted like he was showing improvement here

Simply because he'd lose rounds prior to getting knockouts, people were starting to gift him with some great sense of patience and ring iq

To be fair, it took a Tyson Fury to really expose it all. Many of us were enthralled with the power, just like Wilder himself. I was watching that fight with my mouth wide open. Fury was absolutely amazing and Wilder was just lost. LOL! Did you see the couple of uppercuts during in-fighting?
