Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
What's your thoughts? He's everywhere just now and has boosted his profile, not just with that win but with all the exposure in the run up to the fight. His highly publicised battle with mental health, numerous interviews on tv and online, best selling autobiography, documentary etc... He comes across as an approachable guy whereas AJ seems fake, scripted and closed off. Fury is definitely the more relatable character. The casual/Matchroom mongs will still be more pro AJ and Hearn. More fans of a brand than they are of the sport! Is Fury now a bigger draw? Has he taken boxing back for the hardcores?
Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
In a different way - bigger in mainstream, AJ bigger among boxing / sports fans and likely to sell more tickets quicker.
AJ won't be on Good Morning Britain or This Morning, but more likely to be on the late evening Chat shows more suited for the male demographic getting ready to go to the pub.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
I would say the polar opposite applies to everything you've said there... Fury is by far more popular amongst proper boxing fans... AJ is the guy who's media trained. Fury just says all sorts of crazy things. Fury is more appealing to the man in the street/pub than AJ imo....stujones wrote: ↑24 Feb 2020, 08:24 In a different way - bigger in mainstream, AJ bigger among boxing / sports fans and likely to sell more tickets quicker.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
I've always been up and down with the pair of them. Fury has a habit of taking soft touches in-between his big fights which I've never liked, and all the stupid stuff he said after the Wlad win and the subsequent moaning really put me off him whereas I had been a really loyal follower before; while AJ has consistently taken on credible opponents since he won his world title. But then AJ and Hearn as a pair can be so dislikable and greedy, and Fury taking Wilder when it seemed insane and his 12th round resurrection and now this weekend... I don't know what he'd have to do to have me offside again. He's amazing. Those are proper, never forget them, legendary career moments. When everything is wrapped up and they are all retired, nobody will remember the tune-ups and the fights against complete bums. They'll remember him facing Wilder when AJ and Wilder were doing everything to swerve each other, Klitschko when he was still looking like he would retire undefeated. AJ's momentum was at the highest after the Klitschko win, which was another great fight. But the Ruiz loss and the relatively boring rematch means that Fury's star is currently burning far brighter.
Fighting in Saudi is also very poor form. I hope they do everything to have it over here if it happens. Everybody involved will be even more stinking rich by the time it happens. They should give us our fight and the opportunity to be there. Most of us can't afford to go to Saudi and even if I could I wouldn't. It's a ghastly place. I think fighters should get paid everything they can but that is pure unnecessary greed. Hopefully now Fury is the main man he can use his leverage to get it over here in the UK. See out the US contract and then make the AJ-Fight here.
This is a great heavyweight era. We've had all sorts of ups and downs, mismatches and obvious swerves, but we've had up and down evenly matched fights, blood, violence, KO's, mercy stoppages... It's a weird era because they're some weird characters and physical freaks, but it is a fun era.
I would have voted I don't care but it's sort of important to get the fight made. We are dealing with some gargantuan egos all around here, from the promoters to the fighters to even the people interviewing them. Adam Smith's interview after the fight where he gave full credit and actually came across as a good bloke who sincerely wanted to make the fight shows you what an absolute c*nt Hearn has become.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
Klitschko had lost a few before Fury btw.
Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
You got me there. I knew that, like everybody else. I won't edit it out to make myself look good, just hold my hands up to the mistake. They were early losses though. He was undefeated for about ten years. He had to get big bro to sort out Sanders for him. Even then the fat golfer (RIP) sent Vitali staggering back across the ring.
Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
I think Fury has become a bigger attraction generally, but am still not sure that across all demographics he will be viewed as bigger than AJ.
As mentioned, there has been the book, and documentary and some big stories about him in the build up to the fight, his presence among the general public has certainly increased.
The win and the nature of it have undoubtedly raised his profile further.
I think amongst boxing fans, his profile/status as an attraction has always been reasonably high, though there are some that have previously not found his style entertaining enough to match what he gets up to at press conferences and in the aftermath of fights. I'd imagine the style employed in this fight may have swayed some.
However, I think there are still huge numbers of people, particularly the more casual fans or the public generally which view AJ as the bigger attraction.
AJ has had a huge marketing machine hyping him for so long that you can see him pretty much everywhere, posters in sports stores, adverts on the back of buses and at train stations for non-boxing related products, and he has been well aimed at a certain demographic.
There are some young guys I work with who have been brought up in the era of youtube stars as celebrities and AJ seems to resonate and be more well known to them (some of whom watched the fight at the weekend but have said didn't really know that much about who Fury was and his past exploits in the ring, and still have the opinion that seeing an AJ fight at the O2 is the pinnacle of what they can see boxing-wise).
So I would say that in boxing circles, Fury's stock has undoubtedly gone up and amongst the general public he has definitely raised his profile and is now a bigger attraction.
Overall though I think that when being sold to the general public, AJ probably still just edges it.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
Okay I perhaps didn't make my point clear..... Joshua is more popular among the Male 21-45 demographic who like Sports..... Fury's road from Suicidal thoughts to redemption have won over the Mums and Grans.Stuarty wrote: ↑24 Feb 2020, 08:44I would say the polar opposite applies to everything you've said there... Fury might be more popular amongst True boxing fans (like myself, yourself etc.) but how many of those make up Joshua's Cardiff / Wembley audience. I was in Cardiff for Parker and I can say - not many!
Joshua's fans are those that will say - AJ vs Mayweather is the fight I want to see next (I heard that so many times in Cardiff)
Fury's fans are those who will scream and cry if he's cut.
The ones who can name more than 10 current world champions are morely likely to be Fury fans, but a big minority. We've usually spent so much on PPVs (of both guys) that we cannot afford a ticket!
Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
The way I look at this is my wife only ever gets boxing in her social feed when AJ is fighting. She doesn't follow him or anything but her friends and people she knows comment on his fights in a way they don't any other fighter.
Until recently, he was probably the only boxer she could name.
On Sunday, her 'network' were talking about Fury too.
Those are now the only two current British boxers who have crossed over and become mainstream.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
I think he's crossed over now as a result of the tv programme on itv, the autobiography, the single with Robbie Williams, the wrestling etc. Saturday night's performance won't hurt either.
One thing is for sure, a fight between Fury and Joshua in the UK is huge now. Perfect dancing partners

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
AJ has hurt his profile by losing to Ruiz and fighting in Saudi, I doubt he will ever have the popularity to sell 70k tickets on his name alone again.
Fury has had a prime time series on ITV , something Joshua has never had and the casuals will now jump on his bandwagon.

social media isn’t everything of course but currently AJ has 10,000,000 followers and Tyson has 3,000,000
Edit: in the ten mins since I posted this Fury has gained 300,000 followers on insta. Perhaps by then end of the month we will see who is winning...

NO The fury novelty will wear off
AJ has been pulling in fans year after year since he got a belt whilst fury was " in retirement " .

No one puts bums on seats like AJ.
AJ sells himself. Fury needs a dance partner.

Re: Is Fury Now a Bigger Attraction than AJ?
In America, Yes. In the U.K., probably not.
However if AJ keeps on being The Champion of the Middle East, and neglecting to fight in England, Fury will overtake him in short order.
