DAZN to launch in UK during 2022?

Post by Enlightened-One »

John Skipper, executive chairman of DAZN, has said that he plans to launch the streaming service in the UK as soon as they acquire the Premier League football rights, which they're able to purchase in 2022.

Thoughts? :-?

I'm not familiar with the UK sports market.

Is obtaining the Premiere League rights realistic or just wishful thinking?

There are laws preventing any particular network from having exclusive ownership of all Premier League games, but in order to acquire the lion's share of the UK market, to take over Sky's current situation, DAZN will need to fork out roughly £4bn to own four of the available seven live packages.

I don't know where this money is coming from, but those are John Skipper's plans.

In order for DAZN to be considered a serious player in the UK market, they need to compete head-on with Sky and BT, with the former considered the biggest player in that territory.

It’s an interesting situation, because Matchroom have exclusive deals with DAZN and SKY.

This means that if DAZN is introduced to the UK market in 2022, Matchroom will very likely end their partnership with Sky in 2025.

Interesting.
DAZN has shown interest in getting rights to sports that are more popular in America.
That would also require an obscene amount of money to achieve.

When it becomes available over there I hope it's as cheap for you guys as it is here.

It would be great for everyone however you can get DAZN via a VPN

The weekends big fight is being shown on DAZN Italy - which is a touch because it is significantly cheaper

That’s surprising, I thought it would be region locked, similar to Amazon and Netflix (due to the app detecting VPN’s).

This breaking news has come a couple of years sooner than DAZN initially announced...

"Streaming giants DAZN launch in the UK with plans to smash Sky and BT Sport's domination of the sports TV market by winning rights for big fights including Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury III AND Premier League coverage"

• Streaming service DAZN, the Netflix of sport, is set to launch in the UK in May
• Billy Joe Saunders poised to face Canelo Alvarez on May 2 in first fight shown
• DAZN are also set to bid for the rights to show Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury III
• It is anticipated that viewers will pay around £4.99 a month for the service
• DAZN will show 12 fights a year and hope to expand to show top flight football

DAZN, the so-called Netflix of sport, is to launch in the UK in May - with Billy Joe Saunders expected to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in a mouthwatering first fight on the streaming service.

Sportsmail can reveal that the UK-based platform will expand to more than 200 countries, starting with Canelo's return to the ring on May 2.

WBO super-middleweight champion Saunders is the front-runner to face world boxing's biggest star, though no deal has yet been finalised. Liverpool's WBA champion Callum Smith is also in the mix for the kind of mammoth showdown both have long craved.

DAZN's impending expansion marks another seismic shift in the British broadcasting landscape, which has been dominated for the past few decades by the likes of Sky Sports and BT Sport.

DAZN have not been shy in splashing the cash since entering boxing with a $1billion, eight-year deal with Hearn back in 2018.

They are likely to continue in this vein after going global. It's expected they will bid to broadcast the trilogy fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, reportedly penciled in for July in Las Vagas.

Fury is aligned with BT Sport on these shores but DAZN showed his rematch victory in five European countries and will likely test BT's resolve when the two heavyweights collide once more.

Amazon Prime has recently dipped its toes into the UK market, showing Grand Slam tennis and Premier League football. Now DAZN hope to break the stranglehold of traditional fight sport broadcasters in this country before stretching its web to other major sports - including Premier League football - over time.

Rather than putting the biggest fights on Pay-Per-View, which in the UK can cost up to £25, DAZN charges a monthly subscription for all its coverage.

Sources have indicated that UK viewers will pay around £4.99 a month for the service, which will initially show around 12 boxing shows a year.

For that, they can watch the likes of Canelo, Gennadiy Golovkin, Mikey Garcia and Katie Taylor. Saunders and other boxers signed to Eddie Hearn's Matchroom USA will also fight on DAZN in the UK.

The streaming service currently has US and international broadcasting rights to Anthony Joshua's fights, too. But the world heavyweight champion is still tied up with Matchroom's UK arm, which has an existing deal with Sky Sports. It's understood Joshua's contract has between one and two years left to run, after which there will be a scramble for his services.

Canelo, meanwhile, signed a $365m, five-year, 11-fight deal with DAZN in 2018. It was believed to be the richest contract in sports history and the Mexican superstar is set to return to the ring on the holiday weekend of Cinco de Mayo.

Britain's Saunders and Smith are both eyeing a shot at the four-weight king.

Since launching in 2016, DAZN has so far expanded to nine countries – Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

They currently show a host of major sporting events, including the Premier League, Champions League, Bundesliga and the Six Nations.

'Boxing's global resurgence makes it the ideal time to roll out our sports streaming service around the world. This follows DAZN's significant investment in the sport over the past two years. 2020 is shaping up to be a huge year in the ring and we're looking forward to our global kick-off starting with Canelo Alvarez on 2 May,' said DAZN EVP Joseph Markowski.

I'd actually consider paying for boxing of it was £5 a month. However, not unless I get enough events at reasonable times in the UK rather than all Vegas events. I'd also want access to other sports, but £5 a month to also include premier League football seems unlikely, they will increase that figure.

Bring it on I say. I do hate the idea of Premier League Football being further fragmented though. Whenever I want to watch my team it always seems the game is being shown by them I don't subscribe to.

Seems to me if you really want to watch top level English football (on screen as opposed to at the stadium) your best bet is to move overseas. :witzend:

ESPN, probably the biggest sports broadcaster in the world, tried to crack the UK market and failed. More recently global streaming service Eleven Sports entered the UK market landing exclusive La Liga rights, Seria A rights, PGA rights and the UFC. Things unravelled quickly due to a lack of uptake and a failure to land a carriage deal with Sky and Virgin Media.

There is very little top level football rights available for the next 2 years. By all accounts Dazn are showing 12 fight nights per year. Probably Goldenboy shows and Eddie's shows from Italy. Sky failed to show the last 2 Italian shows live.

Dazn aren't going to get their own way here. Amazon are likely to bid for future sports rights. Disney + launches in the UK in 3 weeks. They now own ESPN. I'm sure they'll have a future interest in adding sport to their service.

All that's going to happen is sports coverage being spread over more broadcasters and platforms costing sports fans more money. Dazn is going to be less than a fiver to start with but as they add more rights the price will escalate quickly. We've seen their prices go up quickly State side. Also I find it hard to see Eddie leaving Sky. The box office cash cow is too good.

I read it as 12 UK nights plus the US (Matchroom/Golden/GGG) content.

Matchroom will very likely end their partnership with Sky in 2025 (when their contractual partnership expires) if DAZN offer more money, which they almost certainly will do.

I have certainly voiced some skepticism about DAZN in the past so I'm no stranger to this issue.
All I can tell you is I signed up and it's been very good, it's beat my expectations that's for sure.
In terms of content, depends on what you like doesn't it.
Me, I'm a boxing, football, nfl, rugby and whatever else you want to through in type of person and have zero complaints.
Sure it can buffer, but it really isn't that bad and they have worked out most of the quirks, at least on my end.
There are so many good things about the way they deliver their sports, options including full games, partial highlights and brief highlights have been among their strong points.
DAZN are obviously a clued up firm and have done their homework, if there was something significantly bad about them I'd bring it up in a heartbeat, but so far it's been impressive and I'm likely to sign up for another year when it's time to renew.

For the boxing division of Matchroom, you may be right, but Matchroom will still be working with Sky until 2025. :TU:

Boxing

Matchroom have been active, PBC too.
HBO shut down.
DAZN boxing has been above average, it's not phenomenal but it's ok.

• Sky Sports (UK) cost per month = £23
• DAZN (UK) cost per month = £4.99

The price for the most recent Sky Box Office boxing event was £24.95, which was the Joshua-Ruiz rematch. And this is the financial equivalent of five months of subscription fees for DAZN.

Sky Box Office televised six PPV events in the UK during 2019, with the total cost being £114.70 ($146.58), which could potentially pay for 23 months’ worth of DAZN streaming fees.

If you paid to watch the entire sporting catalogue of Sky Sports during 2019 (using the above figures), it would have cost viewers £390.70 ($499.29) for the entire year, which would pay for more than 78 months' worth of DAZN streaming fees.

Even if the quality of the DAZN programming in general is only above average, it’s still value for money, regardless as to whether they inevitably double the cost of this introductory price in the near future.
