Canelo Alvarez will fight WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend boxing slate on May 2, sources told ESPN Deportes' Salvador Rodriguez.

The announcement of the 168-pound unification fight could be made official in the next 24 hours or even sooner, the sources said.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is the "regular" WBA super middleweight champion. Saunders is 29-0 with 14 KOs.

This is seventh championship battle for Alvarez after he won the previous six, including four in middleweight.

In his most recent outing, on Nov. 2, Alvarez scored an 11th-round stoppage of Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title.

50% for a Saunders decision. How does that work?

I could see a scenario where Saunders outboxes Canelo in a close fight, but he’d have to be at his very best and be in excellent condition. I wouldn’t pick that happening but it’s certainly not impossible.

He’s absolutely zero chance of getting it on the cards in Vegas though unless it was a virtual whitewash, which I can’t see happening

I voted Saunders on points- tbh I’m not overly confident at 168 but I think he could give Alvarez problems

Thing with Canelo is he’s never active for the full 12 rounds.

He was clearly behind against Kovalev, but 2 judges had him ahead before the stoppage. So yeh, BJS will need to be on his a-game throughout.

Nobody would ever get a decision against Canelo now even if they did outbox him.

Bills gonna take a bit of a beating at 168. He would of had a better chance against Canelo at 160

I think that’s what’s makes this almost impossible for Saunders to win - he’d have to clown Canelo to have a chance of getting a decision and Canelo is a very good technician himself.

It’s a really good fight though. Of course it’s a huge payday but Saunders is stepping right into the Lions Den to get it. When he’s fit and motivated he’s a beautiful boxer though, smooth and an outstanding judge of distance and timing.

I just can’t picture him winning though. He can’t, IMO, stop Alvarez and Canelo has only ever been on one end of questionable scoring. The Mayweather loss was an MD for fucks sake!

Alvarez in a deserved points decision for me though.

Banker for Canelo on points which is heavily disputed by fans / pundits.

lol. if he 'gives him problems' he'd wind up on the short end of 111-117, bearing in mind he could 'totally outbox' Canelo and lose a S/D or 'school' him to be given a draw

Rocky Fielding could have beat him if he had more power, a better jab, better foot work, a different game plan and could take a punch.

It was been good to see how Saunders performs,i thought Monroe or lemeiux would of gave him big problems but he done them good, maybe he is a fighter that performs better on the bigger stage and he wont get bigger than May 5th against Canelo.

I can see Saunders going into survival mode early doors, getting on the back foot and surviving the 12 rounds.
A wide 119-109 decision for Canelo then Saunders to blame the judges and say he was robbed.

“The day that is official the first to announce will be ME, do not get carried away by “close sources,” said Canelo on his Twitter account.

BJS will have to KO him twice to get a draw. BJS is a bit like Fury where he can look dogsh1t against low level opponents then up his game

BJS will have to send Canelo to the hospital midway through the fight and will still lose a majority decision.
