Canelo Alvarez will fight WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend boxing slate on May 2, sources told ESPN Deportes' Salvador Rodriguez.

The announcement of the 168-pound unification fight could be made official in the next 24 hours or even sooner, the sources said.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is the "regular" WBA super middleweight champion. Saunders is 29-0 with 14 KOs.

This is seventh championship battle for Alvarez after he won the previous six, including four in middleweight.

In his most recent outing, on Nov. 2, Alvarez scored an 11th-round stoppage of Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title.

Yup. Nice fight, although I think atm BJS has slowed down as a fighter but many boxing fans think that BJS is the type of fighter that rises to the occasion when he fights better competition and that his style could give Canelo problems. :box:

Canelo's Cinco de May bout of 2019 against Danny Jacobs was announced on January 17th.

His 2020 Cinco de Mayo fight was only announced today, which is six weeks late.

Billy Joe Saunders has much less than eight weeks to be ready for his opportunity of a lifetime against Canelo, because some of that time will inevitably be consumed by trying to sell the fight via interviews and press conferences.

Short notice?

A pro fighter who gets paid very well should be fit and ready anytime of the year. I'm pretty sure that Canelo stays in good shape the whole year. Also both fighters will have the same amount of time to prepare for each other style-wise. Saunders is known as being lazy and undisciplined when he has no fight scheduled. :TU:

Canelo always knew he was competing May 2nd, but he didn't know his opponent. There were doubts for quite some time about whom he was facing. So no, you're wrong Billy Joe and Alvarez didn't have the same amount of time to prepare.

Also loads of fighters gain weight and train less between bouts - it's normal. I can name plenty. Do you seriously think otherwise?

I mean, 12 rounds to get a draw, dude. And that'd only be on the one fairest card.

The BBC have reported that Billy Joe Saunders is being paid £6m ($7.86m) to face Canelo.

Daniel Jacobs earned $10m and Sergey Kovalev earned $12m for their losing efforts against the Mexican.

I don’t really understand the reason why Jacobs received a much bigger payday than Saunders is receiving, because the American has only ever won one legitimate world title fight (his split decision victory over Derevyanchenko), whereas the unbeaten Brit has won all six (capturing world titles in two weight classes, with notable victories over the likes of Chris Eubank Jr., Andy Lee & David Lemieux).

I guess GBP simply chose the opponent that was willing to take the smallest payday, which was something that Eddie Hearn previously speculated.

Daniel Jacobs has very good run before Canelo fight. Close loss to Golovkin and then 3 wins over undefeated prospects (2 of them was very top at the time). Destruction of Peter Quillin is also need to be mentioned. Danny earned every penny :box: :box: :box:

Do people who voted for Saunders by decision don't know anything about Canelo? The only time he lost a decision was when he fought a bigger star who also managed to completely outclass him. All other close or not so close losses are showing on his record as wins or a draw.

And even in that bout a judge had it a draw

I think Canelo will beat him pretty easy. Saunders will frustrate him in spurts, but won't throw or land enough.

Same here but later rounds. As James Mc was saying, Saunders won’t throw enough. Even against Lemieux who he figured out pretty early he didn’t up the tempo. I’d say his stamina is not great. Saunders is tricky and will frustrate but if Canelo brings the pressure like he has recently, I don’t feel Saunders can keep him off.

Canelo is a much more intelligent fighter than Lemieux is aswell.

Also regardless of whoever you think won in the Canelo-Lara fight, I think Lara is more tricky than BJS is and more elusive or was at the time, and that was still a very close fight.

Must be a lot of Poms on here.

Not sure where this narrative came from that Saunders is some elite fighter who can school anyone. He scrapes by B level opponents on the reg - minus Lemieux (Who is maybe a B plus fighter?)

Öh, it's cause he fights to the level of his opponent tho.......

What kind of elite fighter does that?

Canelo by comfortable decision if he doesn't KO him late.

PS. Hope some kid on Canelo's team punches BJS's kid in the balls.

I think Lara was not better than BJS, and BJS can at least repeat what Lara did. Judges' verdict will still be the same.
