Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Don’t know why I’ve never seen or read about this before but I’ve just seen him being screwed at the 84 Olympics.
Good to see the Kiwi holding his hand up, and the gold medalist asking Evander up to the gold medal platform but that was appalling. Up there with Roy Jones in 88.
Anyone any background about why that happened?

Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Holy hit Barry with a vicious left hook as the ref called for a break. He was totally committed already but the ref dq'd him for it. Compete BS.Covfefe wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 17:10 Don’t know why I’ve never seen or read about this before but I’ve just seen him being screwed at the 84 Olympics.

Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Yes, I remember that. Holy was stopping everyone, then that happened.
Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
The biggest problem with the clip is you see the ref from behind so you can’t see him say break, but he does nothing to break it up along with him supposedly saying stop. It looked like a terrible DQ, and watching the action there doesn’t seem a reason to even call break. They’re not in a clinch they’re boxing and Holyfield lands a beautiful body shot and switches up to a left hook, why would he call break? Total nonsense.oogiebe wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 17:48Holy hit Barry with a vicious left hook as the ref called for a break. He was totally committed already but the ref dq'd him for it. Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
If there is a vid of the whole fight, the ref warned both guys over and over again for hitting on the break when he (the ref) was unclear in his instructions during the fight. Worse ref I've ever seen.Covfefe wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 18:11The biggest problem with the clip is you see the ref from behind so you can’t see him say break, but he does nothing to break it up along with him supposedly saying stop. It is pretty well known, I'd wager more people have seen that than Roy's. I'm shocked you never heard about it.
Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Perhaps in the states. Definitely not here. I’ve read about what happened to Roy in magazine pieces, never seen a story about what happened to Evander.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 19:30It is pretty well known, I'd wager more people have seen that than Roy's.

That the events are remembered that different in different places. Holy fields games were actually held here so that makes a big difference, but Jones never approached evanders level of fame here. I've never even seen the Jones fight. Obviously know about it.
Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
It’s perhaps partly me that’s the problem. I was only born in 85. I read about this stuff retrospectively. Jones' robbery has just been mentioned more in stuff I’ve been exposed too. Holyfield's Olympic fame though probably didn’t translate across the Atlantic in the same way.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 19:44That the events are remembered that different in different places. Worst part is it was a bloody great body shot to left hook to stop him. It was beautiful.

Sure was, it was one of the bigger stories of the games in any sport.Covfefe wrote: ↑08 Mar 2020, 19:47It’s perhaps partly me that’s the problem. I was only born in 85. Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
The biggest robbery of the 84 games was the Italian beating Tillman in Tillman's own backyard and then having the decision overturned to a Tillman decision win
Well, Tillman lost, but we want the LA boy to win gold, so let's just give him the win no matter what happens

Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
First, great sportsmanship on the part of his fellow athletes.
'm sure Holyfield saw nothing good in this situation, but in an odd way it helped him with the general public. When this occurred, it was a big deal in the U.S. People who had no interest in boxing were talking about the poor guy who got screwed at the Olympics.
If he had won gold, the attention would've gone to the heavier Tyrell Biggs (we love our big men in the States) or Mark Breland, who was widely celebrated as the greatest amateur of all time. As it stood, he was like a folk hero and got more attention for the controversial loss.

Man, they are aged 22 and 25 there. Both look way older.

Barry looks more like 45
Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
How could they overturn THAT decision, and so many much more blatant and obvious robberies weren't overturned in Olympic history?margaret thatcher wrote: ↑11 Jun 2020, 21:30 The biggest robbery of the 84 games was the Italian beating Tillman in Tillman's own backyard and then having the decision overturned to a Tillman decision win

Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
I guess they really wanted the local boy to win gold?
Funny enough I read that the Roy Jones thingy was done partially because the Koreans thought the Americans got lots of gifts in LA and they wanted payback
Still, what a stacked team that was, you have solid world champs not even among the top 5 of that group

Isn't there almost always a case of a Home country's athlete being favored in a sport like Boxing in every Olympics.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑16 Jun 2020, 12:26 I guess they really wanted the local boy to win gold?

Re: Evander Holyfield Olympics.
Ya, though to actually overturn a result is pretty extreme
