Agit Kabayel vs. Mariusz Wach - March 28, 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Former EBU heavyweight champ Agit Kabayel (19-0 or 22-2) takes on big Polish veteran Mariusz Wach (35-6) with the vacant WBA Continental title at stake on the undercard to Dominic Boesel vs Zac Dunn on March 28 in Magdeburg. Kabayel have been inactive since in March of 2019.

In August Kabayel relinquished the title and on September 4 it was announced he had signed with Top Rank (with SES remaining as co-promoter) but that is how far it got. No US-debut materialized and Agit is back in Magdeburg where he had his last fight.

Relinquished a real belt and ends up fighting for some pointless trinket. Great move...

Yeah quite. Still at least he's finally got his arse out of mothballs at least that's something I suppose.

Those trinkets can actually be quite useful in raising a guy's title ranking, it's the reason we get so many weak ass mandatory challengers

I'd say that those 'lower' level belts can be better if they were held by fighting champions making a case for themselves for a major title shot. So yeah, you're right, they can be beneficial.

Is Kabayel's career the worst managed of any current heavyweight? Beats Chisora when he was 25 and has had two fights against lower opposition, multiple pullouts and titles dropped in the 2+ years since. He should really be fighting 3 times this year if it's going to be against Wach level opposition but I imagine it's more likely that we'll probably see him next facing Dimitrenko in 2021.

Yeah, it seems just when he was making noise, he dropped off the earth. I don't think very highly of him, and I'm guessing his handlers might've been less apt to risk him losing and looking for one big payday. :maybe:

Probably had a higher ranking from holding the EBU than whatever this belt gives. It ranks on a couple of the orgs and definitely on WBA

He's a capable fighter. Decent skills and movement. Not known as a puncher but a good all-rounder. He's still young for a heavyweight but he's in danger of squandering that asset.

I guess the problem with being an EBU champ is that you can be forced to (vacate or) defend against some pretty formidable opposition for relatively small purses, and in some cases years before they would be on your radar if you were a world champion.

I mean taking for example that none of the big three have had to give any thought to a challenge from say Daniel Dubois ar Filip Hrgovic, but if you're Euro champ, these are the kind of guys who have you in their gun-sight and there are plenty more where they come from.

It's a shame that Kabayel has had such an unremarkable career after the Chisora fight. But a Wach match seems to be a pretty tolerable change of pace. Kabayel is a guy that a lot of people want to rank at like #20, and a win against Wach is a solid result for a #20 guy.

he can't hurt wach but the immovable giant will be all night right in front of him to be circled and chopped away on, eating everything agit brings and still pondering forward like a oversized punching bag on stilts.

wach is too slow to catch a faster moving kabayel with anything he can't avoid, block, dodge or ride with.

if he's crazy and decides to stand and trade powershots with the big pole he may wake up in hospital.

kabayel by UD wide.

An OK option for Kabayel, a decent past prime name, which should be handled comfortably.

Dominic Boesel vs. Zac Dunn in Magdeburg is Now in Jeopardy

Fighting the coronavirus is tough and the list of postponed or cancelled shows continues to grow and here are some of the latest: EC Boxing´s show to go - March 21 set for their gym in Hamburg is now off. This show was in turn a replacement for the EC / Wiking Box Team co-promotion in Berlin on the same date.

Also off are Pro Box Team Finland´s show in Riihijarvi on March 28.

Agon Sports moved their show set for March 21 in Wuppertal to their gym in Berlin for the same date - but that is now also off

The Universum / Sauerland show April 4 in Hamburg is also off.

Still on is SES´ big show in Magdeburg, on March 28, featuring Dominic Boesel´s defense of the WBA-interim and IBO light heavyweight titles against Zac Dunn - however it will be with a very small crowd in attendance.

Also note, there is a new set of restrictions in Germany that may jeopardize even this show.

In Sweden the commission made it clear they won´t license any shows until June 1.
