Just seen reports that former world champion Roger Mayweather has died, he was on a lot of big bills , double world champion.

I remember his fight against Vinny Paz, he gave Paz a boxing lesson that night , and took on Lou Duva at the final bell.

A dynamite puncher with a glass jaw, vicious and dangerous as hell. He was known as the Mexican assassin for awhile, as he put paid to a string of their top fighters. before running into the mercurial JC Chavez, who needed that cast iron jaw to out gun the black mamba.

RIP Roger Mayweather, certainly one of the most exciting champions of the 1980’s.

I was In the crowd when they both came to Manchester town hall to build up the fight, got to shake De La Hoyas hand and have a brief chat.

It felt like being a part of one of those all time great fights. When you watch videos of the great 80s era you always see bits of the build up and this felt like one of those moments.

Mayweather thinking he’s funny wearing a United shirt playing for the crowd. Not throwing out notes though as it’s a fiver here not a dollar bill.

I remember having a decent conversation with another crowd member about who did the better job on Gatti, DLH or Mayweather.

Funny to look back Gatti was considered an option for Hatton around that time.

I think DLH was more impressive.

Gatti never got going in either fight. He did land a few on DLH early but Oscars chin was made of granite at that point and a smaller Gatti wasn't going to trouble him, even with his vaunted left hook. Mayweather was more skillful and it was a complete mismatch in which Gatti was given a hiding in his hometown but for me, the ease of DLH's win is more impressive.

I don't think Oscar got out of first gear and he had Gatti crumpled to the floor in the first with a blistering combination. He was doing things at his own pace and it was clear Gatti was going to have to climb Mount Everest.

Mayweather came out in 5th gear and early on you had no doubt Gatti was going to be earning his money.

Ultimately Mayweather seemed to expend much more effort than Oscar did and for me that makes Oscars win slightly more impressive.

Gatti really had no business at those levels and it showed massively. With Oscar becoming such a weirdo gimpy annoying promoter boi, I can forget sometimes how good and tough he was. Physically he had it all but lacked the ring smarts I think to do more than he did (whereas Floyd was a ring Einstein)

Roger was a lethal puncher with the right hand and set up opponents beautifully for the shot with the jab. He always reminded me of Tommy Hearns in the way he fought and when he unloaded, it was thrilling, deadly fare. After just a handful of fights, he poleaxed the notoriously cagey Sammy Serrano to win his first world title in Puerto Rico (shades of Buchanan-Laguna, only better) and he flattened plenty more as he moved through the weights and wound up WBC light-welterweight champion. Yes, his chin let him down at times and yes, he was a spiteful bugger but there were few more exciting fighters than Roger - ever.

Had a decent conversation with Roger the night before ODLH vs Floyd. He was in the MGM and was surrounded by people, but he made time for everyone, think he was still there chatting at 2am when I passed through again.

At the time I thought he was just Floyds trainer but looked his fights up when I got home and was very impressed. Everyone was exciting.

I would disagree, mainly because at the time of the Mayweather fight, Gatti was going through a bit of an indian summer and was looking very impressive (albeit at a lower level of world class). For me, alongside Corrales and Alvarez it was one of the stand out displays of TBE.

Come on, "glass jaw" is an outrageous slur on Roger's toughness. You simply don't win that many fights against such good opposition with a glass jaw. He got nailed a few times, but what do you expect when you consistently mix in the company that the Black Mamba did and prepared to go to war for the crowd's viewing pleasure !?

Although he has been described as chinny he did go 12 rounds with a young Kosta Tszyu, and 5 out of 6 of his knockout losses were against big punchers.
At least he wasn't afraid to get in the ring with them .
