Fury McDermott 1

Post by jameswilson »

Re watched this after a number of years having not seen it and do have the same opinion that McDermott did win by a pretty decent margin enough that I would call this a robbery (as opposed to scoring the fight 96-94 and moaning robbery that it went 96-94 the other way.)

Even if you had Fury winning surely 98-92 is one of the worst scorecards we’ve seen? As I’ve said before we have some clowns officiating over here but I always put Terry O’Connor right at he very top of the list of shittest referee out there.

On the flip side had McDermott got the nod here I think Fury’s career would have probably run an almost identical course. He’d have won the rematch by KO and then kicked on.

I can’t help think that McDermott could have got out the game with some bigger paydays had he got the nod over Williams and Fury, two bad decisions in my opinion.

Thoughts?

It was a close fight where the right scores are probably a 96-94 or 95-95. McD I thought won 4 of the first 5 but then Fury came on.

The score from Tel was just blatant, haha at you, who is the loser now McDermotts, type of stuff

I was there in Brentwood that night and I fancied Big John as it was a gigantic step up and JM was unbelievably tough and his boxing skills much underrated. I had money on JM to win on points but felt Fury did enough to get the nod (watching from my seat). I also watched it back recently after watching the brilliant John McDermott interview with Kugan (watch it if you haven’t), its pretty clear McDermott edges Fury on the watch back but it’s still close and actually a great performance by both men and bloody good English dust up.

I’ve not seen this since I watched it live, so appreciate you posting it. From memory I scored it a draw but felt McDermott won his rounds more convincingly for what it’s worth.

Watching it now I’ve given the first two rounds to Fury. JMcD’s done well getting close but he’s smothered a fair bit of his own work doing so and Fury has jabbed well and landed some clean right hands. Close rounds but both Fury’s for me

Third round to Fury as well, close round but I thought he generally maintain the distance with his jab and again JMcD wasn’t really timing his right hand.

Clear 4th for JMcD though as he really started to land that overhand right as he came in and gave Fury no room get his shots off.

I wonder if we will see more positive cards for Fury now revisiting it these years later....a shifting narrative

5th round McD. Really jabbing well now and showing excellent head movement early in the round.

He look pretty tired in the 6th though and threw a lot of arm punches. Fury looks tired as well but his better jabbing won the round for me.

58-56 Fury (not how I was expecting to have scores it by this stage to be honest)

7th really close, both look knackered. McD hardly doing anything other than walking forward and catching Fury’s gloves, Fury throwing some range finding jabs and a few cuffing body shots. Fury just for me although I wouldn’t argue it either way.

Big 8th for McD though. Absolutely nails Fury with the straight right hand several times in the first half of the round and lands some good left hooks to the body as well. Fury looks absolutely knackered

9th close again. McD pushing Fury back well but several good body shot combinations from Fury and a good uppercut in the last 30 seconds. Another close round but I’ve edged Fury again. 87-84

10th another close round but Fury just a bit busier for me which means I’ve scored it 97-93 to him. Some close rounds but I cannae really believe I’ve scored it that way as from memory I though O’Conners card was shocking.

Could be that I can’t score a fight now! There were plenty close rounds, enough that I wouldn’t argue with someone scoring it the other way. Certainly not a clear robbery in my eyes though

Maybe now that we know Fury's top in the world we'll be seeing more success there? I think reputation plays a role in how we judge and his rep has changed big time. Guys like Hop and Floyd could literally do nothing in a round and take it completely off and still have people talking about how they totally schooled their opponent there with masterful boxing. We start to see more of what we've come to expect from someone, and we've come to see that Fury is way above McD

A few things need to be considered when re-watching this fight.

A) sorry never gets or got the credit he deserves for taking this fight so early. It was his eighth fight for christs sake.
B) How hilarious is it that sky are putting this up in a bid to sow seeds of doubt as to who is the best heavyweight?
C) as for the actual fight, I remember thinking back then that it was very much one of those fights that history proclaims of robbery that was in fact more a case of what you liked style-wise. McDermott certainly landed the more impressive looking shots, but Fury was def in it. I Remember reading about it on here and thinking it must've been a disgrace, then when I actually watched it I wondered what all the fuss was about. It was a 10 round fight and if My memory serves me, I had Fury winning the first two and the last two, so regardless of who you thought won it, robbery is far too harsh an expression.
D) fury didn't shy away from the rematch, and stopped McDermott despite still being out of shape. This fight in hindsight was probably the making of him.
E) I understand the point that the previous post I made about seeing success now that we know what fury is capable of, but likewise people were shocked by McDermott's performance so I felt it gave him more credit rather than watching it without bias

The fact that Terry O Connor was allowed to ref or judge after the fight said it all about the BBBofC . He should have been dropped after that fight because they had to change the rules in relation to English title and British title eliminators making them three ringside judges.

I remember having McDermott winning the fight, also in the rematch it was close untill Fury got to him.
Fury learned so much in those 2 fights and has a lot to thank Big John for

McDermott won that first fight - he was jobbed out of a victory but it wasn't an all-out robbery.

Cracking fight - both of them were! If only all fights were like that?

This fight happened around about the same time as everyone was going mad taking Bubbles and Kat, I remember watching it in my folks house whilst being out my dish , in pretty sure it was a Friday night fight, I'd been up all night at a house party then nipped along my mums watched this card then got right back on it

I thought McDermott nicked it but it was close, pretty sure this was same weekend Darren Sutherland killed himself

Fury was very disappointing in this fight, swinging with no power.

McDermott, a tidy boxer and the spitting image of my little brother.
