Asiku v McKeever

Post by nickd »

That was predictable, McKeever has one of the worst defences in the sport and Asiku can really whack. TKO1!

This Asiku fella is pretty handy.

Yeah, seems ike a nice fella, someone we can get behind. Is he fighting "out of" or "by way of" or is he British?

He is Ugandan and was based in Australia for a while, his entourage carried Ugandan and Australian flags into the ring. But he is based in London now. Seems like a lovely bloke will certainly be getting behind him. He's obviously way too good for this level time to move him up.

Ok.......now McKeever was about to be stopped probably. But what the fornicate was with the timing of it?? He didn't really land any heavy shots after the second knockdown but the ref just walks in and stops it?? Wft?? Ref's are waaay to keen to stop fights these days. Its an ego thing like they wanna get that "perfect" stoppage or something. No-one really has a shot to mount a comeback these days in a British ring with these kind of ref's.

The stoppage was fair as McKeever would only have taken more of a pasting. Asiku is now living in coventry i believe... world class? why not?

Asiku Cook anyone?

I think the ref had thought about stopping it after the second knockdown, and McKeever was blinking quite a bit he was clearly still hurt from the knockdown. Not that bad a stoppage IMO.

Although he looks really impressive, still hard to guage if he is world classed based on wins over Callaghan or McKeever who are along way off European class.... Looks so impressive though, my kind of fighter.

Also, big well done to Tony Dodson - who has contributed to the forum in the past. He has had it tough with injuries and I was half tempted to make a post tipping Hearn, cause I thought Tony would be rusty.... He looked good and an excellent talker - really refreshing to see. Anthony Small, thats how it is done.

Considering the time he's had out, Dodson looked very good. Caught a few shots, but he was pretty composed for the main part. His right uppercut was finding the mark all night. Looked in good shape physically, seemed strong.

Yes, I remember when Sky showed one of his defeats (Cuts) - I thought he looked fitter and healthier now than he did then.

very strong for the weight and always in control of the action.

I think that fight was with Pierre Moreno Stu, Dodson was well in control as well to that point. Missed last night's action, Asiku is a bit of a sleeper but maybe a bit soon to claim world class? He has beaten Callaghan and McKeever, but still both inside a round so he must be handy.

Think that was the fellow. Yes, Dodson was in control, but if I remember Moreno was coming into it and Dodson was looking tired.

Anyway, I don't want to turn it into an negative thread after such a positive performance last night. He really did well.

I was very impressed by Asiku. Heavy handed, accurate, composed. You never know how far he can go but he did give an impression of being world class.

A few yrs ago he lost to Rakkiatgym in Thailand. anyone seen this fight? has Asiku only recently got really good?

Its fairly feasable he was pretty good then, all his loses have come early in his career against top top men. Nedal Hussein in his 9th fight!! gary St Clair in his 13th then the countdown-conundrum in his 14th. Interestingly not one of them decked him either!!

and the loss to 3K Battery is by 4,3,2 points on the judges cards . Seeing as it was in Thailand you never know how close the fight could have been .

Asiku looked seriously good. I'm not sure about calling him world-class (although I think he certainly could be) because he beat Jamie McKeever. McKeever was known to all and sundry as strictly domestic class some time ago, and I don't like to elevate a man to world class after seeing off a fighter who was someway below that level.

However, that's my only complaint. Asiku looked excellent: Heavy handed, totally composed, extremely economical with his shots (if it wasn't going to land, he didn't throw it) and he mixed it up between head and body very, very well. I'm always a big fan of guys who work the body well, and Asiku looked hurtful downstairs. Interesting to see where he goes next, because I'm not sure how many doors the Commonwealth title opens up, certainly compared to the European belt. I doubt the likes of Nicky Cook, for instance, will be queing up to fight him.

Here Here on everything.

The Commonwealth title seems to open doors for British fighters - i.e. moving from Commonwealth champion to European champion, but doesn't seem to for the other nations. Remember David Tetteh who beat Billy Schwer, and Kofi Jantuah never really got a look when he was Commonwealth Welter champion.

As you said we cannot judge untill he is up against a better opponent, Jantuah himself looked the real deal vs Gilbert Eastman, but never quite made it at world title honours.

He might get himself ranked by the WBO beating British fighters for the commonwealth title , as the WBO seem to monitor the British scene quote closely and probably rank more British guys than any of the other sanctioning bodies . Even guys like Martin Power + Michael Jennings have been ranked as #by the WBO at some point even though they are domestic level fighters .

I think he needs some promotion behind him if he's to be ranked. Jennings was falsely rated by the WBO, and surely allegedly helped in that respect. If Matchroom get behind him, alongside sky, I'm sure he can get some notice. On his last 2 showings, he certainly deserves it. It's a shame he's not European, because that EBU belt brings you some attention in the rankings.

On another note, let's hope that sky show the same enthusiasm they showed last night for another British based African, and help Ali Nuumbembe get his overdue Commonwealth title fight. Although Anderson undoubtably deserves a rest after the war with Mutley.

Certainly we can't just say he's world class for beating McKeever. He was definitely a level up, but how many levels?

Don't want to push this too far, but he reminds me of Ricardo Lopez. The mix of power, composure, deceptive speed and superb repertoire. Can't wait to see this guy fight again
