Has anyone been to the IBHOF in Canastota ?

Post by nobleart1978 »

Has anyone been to the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in Canastota, New York.
I know it's been cancelled this summer due to coronovirus.
I'm thinking of going next year.
Any thoughts on it if you've been would be appreciated.

I never visited, but I was planning on going to the induction ceremony this year if it was safe to travel and be in New York. I called the IBHOF to ask if it would be postponed due to the virus. It was still scheduled at the time, but now I see on their website that the 2020 and 2021 classes will both be inducted next year, so this year's induction ceremony is cancelled.

Yes I’ve been, it’s decent. I’ve never been to an inductee event just visited it as a museum as I was within a couple hours drive from it.

One of the things I remember was a load of fighters fist moulds which was interesting. Loads of old tickets, fightwear, I’ll have to look back over my pictures as to the other stuff.

All I picture is a bunch of self labelled boxing historians--claiming to be working on a book, all wearing rimmed hats and chewing unlit cigars, and self indulgently circle jerking over the early 1900s and how great Jack Johnson and co were and how 'they don't make em like the used to'. Just tbh

Hahah, that was not my experience. When I went it was very quiet And you could mooch about at your leisure looking at the memorabilia. I’d take a guess this is the norm apart from induction week maybe. I went on a Saturday, got my tickets from the desk where I was served by a young lady and didn’t see any suits. All very casual.

Maybe if someone has been to one of the induction events they tell us what it was like..

Why is it in canastota? Surely would be easier and more popular if based in a city. Id love to go but its 4 hours from new york and canada so doesnt seem easy to get to for a tourist!

four hours drive on the freeway in the US is the norm, that's a shopping trip to the Americans, go for it?

I know Carmen Basilio was from there. And he was from a family of fighters I believe, so maybe one of them set it up. I agree though, if it were in New York City I would have definitely visited it.

Couple of mates of mine have been multiple times. I was going to go the year Hearns got inducted but didn't get organised enough and have meant to go before.

Anyway yeah, it's not in a big city but so what? Most people that go make a weekend of it and you more often than not get to mix/chat to the boxers and promoters etc on both the day and the evenings as everyone is staying in the same area as it's just a small town. A lot of other boxers go for the weekend too, not just the inductees.

I'm imagining some nightmare multiple Bert Sugar cloning from that description. Would be awful.

As for the weekend, it's on the bucket list for sure.

Id love to go but i live in scotland so not likely unless i went for a week and hired a car. It could be so much higher profile if in vegas or new york.
