Biggest disparity between a fighter's best win and their overall career ranking

Post by margaret thatcher »

Riddick Bowe has 2 atg wins but there is some dispute over his own status even in the top 20, I'm wondering, who scored a win that was most out of proportion with their all time ranking? So this is presumably from guys who otherwise had thin resumes

Posted in history too , but that section can be sloooow

Good examples. Though I'd say Berbick over Ali is actually not that great of a win given the point of time

YEah, I thought that after I posted it. I think there are hundreds of examples of this though. Jose Luis Garcia over Kenny Norton. Marty Marshall over Sonny Liston. Ross Puritty and Lamon Brewster over Wlad Klit...etc.

In a sense, it's almost like ranking the upsets for sure , though something like Santana-Norris I don't really consider because it's hard to actually rate those wins as impressive

Any non hws come to your mind?

DeJesus over Duran. Kotey over Olivares. Leon over Chacon. I'm sure I can come up with several more.

Yeah Tunney often gets overlooked. Even by me admittedly, but his record is stellar, and in 20 rounds with Dempsey he won 19 of them.

Always found it a little odd that their World Championship bouts were only 10 rounders.

I think the first fight was subject to the Philly commission rules. 10 round limits.

I was just about to post that one as well. Great call on Laing as well Banjo.

Danny Williams KO'ing Tyson is an obvious one, though I guess we should acknowledge the context of it being the shell of Iron Mike.
Same thing with Enzo Mac, love the guy but KO'ing RJJ stands out if you're purely judging by record on paper.

Barkley and Hearns as well, as Iran pretty much lost all his major fights other than that.

Steffen Tangstad getting a draw with Buster Douglas - that is a cracking result because all Tangstad was, was a bog standard Euro heavyweight but he came up in a tough school of Chicago boxing and could do it when he wanted to.

Yeah those are solid calls.

Maussa / Harris
Manfreddy/Gatti
Robinson/Gatti x2
Leija/Nelson

You could look at some of those upset wins in the UK for overseas guys in the 90s

Szabo/Matthews
Galfi/Catley
Yelistratov/Mathews

I think it is fair to list Joe Calzaghe here. Now hailed as possibly the greatest ever fighter from Britain, some would say greatest super middleweight ever, yet in reality, who did he beat?

Lacy - rank

Kessler - his best win. Good fighter, but to hang his hat on this? Least we forget, just two years later, Ward stood Kessler on his head, he made much, much easier work of him than Joe did.

Hopkins - good name, but Joe did not look good in this fight, and i dont care that Hopkins was still beating good names, he was soon to turn 44.

Jones Jr - give me a break.

No doubt about it, Calzaghe was a great fighter, but does his record, on paper, really line up with his career ranking as one of the best to ever lace up a pair of gloves???
