To be fair, you named Fitz and Jeffries. Might as well give berbick Ali.

I mean Ali at any age is a great win on paper. I'm sure Berbick bragged on beating Ali until the day he died

I thought the great win thing was just kinda going for any noteworthy win or name on their record.

Fitz or Jeffries for Johnson is worse! McBride beat Tyson! Cmon dude, you're better than just scanning the data base

Johnson's win over Jeannette in 1906 has to count.

Many fighters have beaten great names, not so many have beaten great fighters at their peak and it's really easy to pull someone's record apart if you don't like them or didn't live in their time.

But Vitali does seem the obvious one, he really didn't beat anyone with historical significance.

Anyway, there are some guys in lower weight classes where there is seldom much depth. Galaxy was already mentioned.
Jimmy Wilde, Pascual Perez and Manual Ortiz. Ortiz did have a ton over good fighters, but nothing that really stands out.

No, that's definitely not a fitting example. Walcott, Charles and Moore were great for sure.

Nope. His best fight was his loss to Lewis.

His resume is crap, that's a fact. I'm talking eye test. He doesn't do it for me there either.

I can't call him great either. He did nothing remarkably.

He wasn't even remotely close. No significant wins. Nothing impressive about the eye test either. I was just hoping we could talk about other guys and not ruin this thread.

Well the thread kinda does start with him and use him as the basis of comparison

Wolgast is interesting, I thought for sure that was an error. He beat at least a dozen really good fighters but fell short to brown and Genaro. Really good call, I'd have bet against that.

Mike McCallum.

I don't consider Vitali great at all but if you did a poll of every boxing fan on the internet I bet the majority would have him knocking out Ali. I think unfortunately he will always feature in heavyweight top 10 lists whether we like it or not.

Wolgast did beat a lot of good fighters, but nobody great. Did get a draw against Genaro. I don't there is much question that he was a great fighter.

Vitali by my reckoning beat at least 6 guys who were top 10 at the time

That's a pathetic number by the standards of top welterweights, middleweights, etc but at heavyweight there are plenty of guys with pretty thin resumes.

Sonny Liston for example beat no more top 10 heavyweights than Vitali did.
