Greatest Counterpunches of All Time

While there's a good chance it has been done before, I figured "hey, let's do it again."

All time best Counterpunches.

I'll go first. My favorite because it was such a classic was Holy's right counter to Douglas' uppercut. I could watch that in slow motion all day.

That's my favorite too. It's the first example, which always comes to my mind, when I hear or see someone talking about counterpunching.

Check out at 29:19. Jose Medel against Jesus Pimental. Medel, one of the greats at countering off the ropes, catches Pimental with a sweet left hook. There is another knockdown scored by Medel later in the round, but he is on the attack for that one.

Walcott's Ko of Ezzard Charles must be one of the most famous.

Charlo vs Williams was a nice recent example.

Also, quite clearly, Medel wasn't impervious to the counter himself. Check out 8:10 of this highlight of the first fight between he and Eder Jofre. Medel is absolutely beating the tripe out of Jofre in the 9th before catching this left hook from a dazed Jofre almost at the bell, which signaled the end in the next round.

OK, one more, and one of my favs. Gaby Canizales against Miguel Lora. Canizales had just gotten off the canvas for the first time in his career and is immediately under pressure from Lora who is zeroing in for the KO. Gaby is against the ropes but one can see he has his wits and trying to slip what's coming his way and then BOOM! At 10:32 a killer counter-left hook and Lora is down for the first time in his career. Gaby finished him after that, but the hook was deadly in its setup and precision.

I am often a critic of Eubank Senior....and yes, some of his fights and performances stank to high heaven.
And maybe he is not a great counter hitter who produced the perfect KO.

But I still think he was utterly masterful in his 1990 fight with Benn in Brum and wins like that keep him relevant.

Benn went for the proverbial jugular - and Benn could hit properly, sickeningly hard and was often a force of nature - but time and again Eubank gets a telling straight, hard jab landing flush or a really good solid hook in.

All off the back foot and with Benn surging forwards and throwing bomb after bomb..

Eubank was brave and technically spot-on that night.....he caught Benn with some peaches, just really clean shots that degraded Nigel bit-by-bit and under a great deal of pressure. The crowd wanted his head on a pike as well!

And then he switched things around and joined Benn in the middle of the ring.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but one of my favorite punch sequences in recent years was the 2nd rd of Mayweather v Mosley, when Sugar Shane lands that one two, jab to the body right to the head. Just makes you want to get in a fight and try it out
