Re: Rafael out at Espn
I don’t know, but by his own admission, Dan has to limit the amount of travelling he does for health reasons. He only made long journeys by exception.
It wasn’t about being cost effective about his travel expenses for his employer, ESPN. He just physically wasn’t able to travel to as many events as he wanted to.
I don’t feel that his health had anything to do with ESPN allowing his contract to expire though.
Re: Rafael out at Espn
In 2018 Dan's net worth was estimated under a million and now is 1-5 million.
He experienced a quantum leap from somewhere.

Could've just jumped over the threshold...snake33 wrote: ↑15 Apr 2020, 12:34 In 2018 Dan's net worth was estimated under a million and now is 1-5 million.

Anyway, to be worth $2 million+ (multi-millionaire) at 50 in US isn't a big deal. I seem to remember him mentioning his wife was an attorney or an exec. I imagine Fat Dan probably averaged in the low six figures each year for his 15 at ESPN and probably approaching mid six figures for the past several. If his wife was banking nearly the same, it isn't a stretch.

Re: Rafael out at Espn
Dan Rafael explained to iFL TV 42 minutes ago that changes to ESPN’s management hierarchy led to them refraining from renewing his contract, which he feels may have been due to him earning too much money.
To be honest, Rafael looked rather unhealthy during his chat with Kugan Cassius, but this may have been due to the US lockdown (heavier, scruffier etc.).
Dan conceded that he’s not received any offers yet to work with other parties.
He didn’t seem to anticipate his working relationship ending with ESPN as soon as it did.

Maybe you should apply for his jobEnlightened-One wrote: ↑16 Apr 2020, 17:58 Dan Rafael explained to iFL TV 42 minutes ago that changes to ESPN’s management hierarchy led to them refraining from renewing his contract, which he feels may have been due to him earning too much money.

I’ve never been a fan of Dan Rafael’s, but his work ethic and dedication to the sport was unquestionable, even though he often ignored his journalistic obligations to always remain impartial.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑16 Apr 2020, 18:11Maybe you should apply for his jobEnlightened-One wrote: ↑16 Apr 2020, 17:58 Dan Rafael explained to iFL TV 42 minutes ago that changes to ESPN’s management hierarchy led to them refraining from renewing his contract, which he feels may have been due to him earning too much money.

Would I like to be employed by ESPN and earn a decent salary to meet and interview my heroes, absolutely, but it ain’t going to happen.
I reckon I could do the job though, but anyone with any sort of self-esteem/self-belief is supposed to think that way, aren’t they?
Unless you’re a left-wing SJW type person that feels there’s no such things as winners or losers.

Yes he did. And his opinion, even though I sometimes disagreed with it, was always welcome, because he was an educated long-time die-hard fan of the sport.
Re: Rafael out at Espn
I don't read everything he says.
What I know of him ...
He's alright and in touch, one of the best main stream boxing observers around.
Why are they pissed at him ?

They just want a change. ?
Re: Rafael out at Espn
I'm not sure Evander, they haven't responded to my email asking them.

Re: Rafael out at Espn
He should just start a blog or site. He'd do half decent. The money in boxing blogging is garbage. He did extremely well.
Re: Rafael out at Espn
Haha, true. Never thought of that.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Apr 2020, 17:21The irony of Dan writing for something called The Athletic![]()
At this point, he'll probably have to convince DAZN or someone that he's worthy of a paycheck.. unless he wants to move over into MMA.

Re: Rafael out at Espn
So Dan Rafael used to be employed by ESPN, which perhaps restricted his ability to criticise his employers’ boxing content provider, Top Rank.
And now that he’s been released by ESPN, he has written an article for Boxing-Scene, which is owned by CBS, who also owns Showtime, with their boxing content provider being Al Haymon’s PBC.
Interesting.

I never found him to be biased.
Re: Rafael out at Espn
Impartiality definitely wasn't one of Dan's strong suits. Though, I can see how some people like that... they can either agree with it, or find it controversial and interesting.
Personally, I thought he was an average writer who often came off as arrogant. He's been caught doing write-ups on fights that he hasn't seen, but had stated or implied that he had. However, due to his level of access and his affiliation with a flagship company like ESPN, he has been the only reliable writer in the industry for a long time... so we have been forced to deal with him.

Re: Rafael out at Espn
That sums him up perfectly. I meant biased towards a promotion. I called him out on write ups on fights he didn't see, he banned me.JCS wrote: ↑18 Apr 2020, 16:13 Impartiality definitely wasn't one of Dan's strong suits.
