Question on Boxing in Indonesia

Post by mjaco »

I'm not sure if this is the right section to ask this question but it seemed the best fit. I've been doing some research for a paper I'm working on and was examining boxing in Indonesia. I noticed while the Boxrec database does show there were professional boxing matches held in Indonesia prior to 1958, there are no matches listed from 1958 until the sport reappears with a couple of events listed for 1970. I know the 1960s were a period of political turmoil there so I was wondering if pro boxing was officially banned in Indonesia during this period? Any information is much appreciated.

It's all a matter of currently available sources. For the period before 1958 Dutch colonial newspapers have been researched, which in the years after no longer existed. When newspapers for these later years become available, more reseach can and will be done. The language of these sources might pose a problem, however.

Thanks for the reply and good point on the resources available. Still, I find it odd that for 12 years there's not a single mention I can find of boxing in Indonesia. For that matter, I can't find any Indonesian fighters who fought overseas during this time and thus might have been listed in foreign newspapers so I'm still questioning whether pro boxing was taking place during this era in Indonesia. Is there anyone on the board from that part of the world old enough to remember boxing in the 1960s who can say that they recall fights taking place in Indonesia or even an Indonesian fighter during that time?
